I know everybody says BGE charcoal and Royal Oak are the same thing, but my experience was the few bags of BGE lump were better than the few bags of Royal Oak I burned through, two red and one of the green bags. They probably do come from the same place and mine is a small sample size, but I wouldn't be surprised if the pick of the Royal Oak charcoal litter goes into BGE bags.

Royal Oak is a major supplier of charcoal. Last I heard they have several facilities for lump production.  There is no guarantee that the Royal Oak and the BGE lumps came from the same facility.

In cooking, often we implement steps for which we have no explanations other than ‘that’s what everybody else does’ or ‘that’s what I have been told.’  Dare to think for yourself.
