So my awesome wife got me a second large green egg so I could have one for our vacation home.  I went to get a convEGGtor and when I went to put in in grill I notices I didn't have any notches to set the convEGGtor in.  It is just a smooth fire ring. Is this a new design?  It didn't cook any different though, the brisket was delicious.

See pictures below.

Mine at home looks like this.

My new one looks like this.

Welcome to the forum.  I believe it’s the new design, when I replaced mine a few years back it had the notches, of course I cannot remember what the old one had.

Makes it handy if you want the convEggtor low or a little higher.

My Egg is 10 years old, and did not have those notches; is the "convEGGtor" a newer design of the old "platesetter"?

That's interesting.  Mine has the notches in it, but I have never situated the platesetter in the configuration as pictured.  I learned on the forum that the platesetter should always be situated with the third leg toward the back (like a peace sign) as the area by the hinges tends to be hotter.  That is also why when doing a spatchcock, legs should point to the back.  So if that's the case, maybe this is why they are doing the new design?  Or maybe this was just all BS, but hey it has worked for me.

Early early ones have 5 dimples in them, then they switched to the 3 notches, never seen a smooth one like that.  But if thats what they are shipping with, my guess is that the plate setter will be changing soon.

I got my XL two months ago, and there are no notches on the fire ring.

  • My latest egg which was a 2XL, was purchased one year ago.  It does not have notches on the fire ring.  I like it better that way compared to my eggs with the notches.

I bought the CGS woo2 for my XL when my plate setter cracked years ago. The new ring might cause an issue using the Adjustable Rig as I position the Woo 2 in the notches of the fire ring to allow enough headroom for the adj rig.
