Table measurements for Large BGE - accounting for the new hinge

It's a lifelong question of which came first, the table or the Egg...in my case I'm building my table first.[p]I see where a 21" hole will work on a large BGE, what if I want to sink the "new hinge" into the table when the lid is open. What kind of allowance do I need for the hinge?[p]Anyone have any pictures of "new hinge" table cutouts???[p]

SMITTYtheSMOKER, I just retrofitted my BGE and table so my approach was different than yours - but what you are asking is the amount of height and depth - both of which are 4.5". HTH - need any other pixs taken? I may be away for an hour so don't think I'm ignoring you...

RRP,[p]Yes, that's what I'm looking for. [p]So do you feel a 21' cut-out with a 5"x5" notch in the back will do the trick? Is that a 21" hole in your table top?[p]Thanks.

  • SMITTYtheSMOKER, 21 inch on the diameter is correct. What is your height from the bottom platform to the top level ? That will give you good clearance or a hinge that will not clear... Plan on a stone or some clearance under the Egg to keep the heat off your bottom shelf ???? Be sure to include that in your calculations...

    SMITTYtheSMOKER,
Yes it's a 21" hole, but I'm not sure we're on the same page here...if you are wanting your table top to be flush with the lip of the BGE or thereabouts then you need an unobstructed area behind the back which will accomodate 4.5" out and 4.5" down so, yes, 5 & 5 would work - but the 3rd dimension is the width of the hinge itself and to clear the nuts you need 9.5"[p]here again is mine open

[p]So in other words you need to allow space of 4.5 high, 4.5 deep and 9.5 wide. Clear as mud??? LOL[p]

RRP,[p]So looking down at the table top I need a notch on the back of the 21" circle cutout that is 9.5" wide and 4.5" deep, right? I have a hollowed table so a deep measurement isn't needed.[p]Thanks for the input, it's what I'm looking for.[p]-Smitty

    SMITTYtheSMOKER,
yes - but in the wisdom of woodworkers everywhere...measure twice and cut once!

    SMITTYtheSMOKER,
I've tried to help you, but iffin you or someone else is cutting a stainless steel top then please abide to ALL the other measurements suggested about the stone/feet/etc! Wood is forgiving - metal is not!!!

RRP,[p]Can I get a picture of the bottom shelf and your set-up (brick/legs) under your cooker please. What measurement do you have from top of bottom shelf to top of upper shelf?[p]Thanks again, Smitty

SMITTYtheSMOKER,
    here ya go...
keep in mind I was retrofitting my table so there is an additional stepping stone here that you would not need.
From top of bottom shelf to top of the top shelf is 19.25"
    Two stepping stones are 3.5"
Top of top stepping stone to top of top shelf is 15.75"
