Dome Thermometer Gasket

I recently needed to replace my original BGE (non Tel-Tru) thermometer on my large Egg and decided to go with the Tel-Tru BQ325R (3" face/3" probe version) because I like the different color "zones" on the face better than the plain face of the BGE version. The original thermometer did NOT have a silicone washer behind it or it disintegrated.

At the same time, I decided to re calibrate the BGE thermometer (Tel-Tru) on my other Egg and in the process misplaced the silicone washer that goes between the calibration nut & the dome. I plan to replace that smaller thermometer as well with another Tel-Tru BQ325R.

However, the Tel-Tru from Tel-Tru, doesn't come with a silicone washer and when I asked them about getting one, I was told they only furnish them to Big Green Egg with the thermometers they make for them which I guess was a polite way of saying, "NO, we won't sell you one even though you just spent $80 with us..."

I asked BGE about getting replacements but I haven't heard back and I don't know if that means the answer is also NO, or I may get a surprise in my mailbox.

I know the silicone washers are not necessary, but I'd like to replace them and I don't want to use RTV or something else.

There has to be a source for those things out there but I cant find it, can anybody help?

Thanks!!

This is a flat washer, about 3/4" in diameter and 1/8" thick with a hole through the center for the stem.

There must be reason BGE asks for them one would think?

Smokeware furnishes a silicone washer with their thermometers as well.

    Thanks for the link anyway!

Another good reason to do business with Smokeware. They sent me a gasket with their thermo.

@Sizzlean I had original BGE non Tlu-tru (at least not marked) w/o any grommet like thing on the stem and BGE Tel-tru's with and w/o them.  I use a wine cork on the outside of the dome w/o any grommet to get spacing for the cooking area.  I have no idea of the history of BGE and their latest request but it's not gonna impact the thermo.  FWIW-
BTW- welcome aboard and enjoy the journey.  Above all have fun.

The Smokeware I have included a gasket.  It is not providing an air or water seal as the clip on the back is not installed.
I like to rotate the dial to put my desired temp at 12 o'clock.  Makes it easy to see at a glance, from inside the house, if the temp has strayed.

How about a faucet washer? They come in many shapes and sizes with a hole in the center.

  • I have one on mine and I found that if the dial gets turned accidentally it throws off my calibration.  I was actually thinking about taking it off.

Why would you need a gasket? My egg didn't come with one (and I threw the spring clip in the trash). I turn the thermo so the target temp is at 12 o'clock. Easy to monitor from anywhere.

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

You sure that distortion isn't because of the spring clip inside? I believe so...

In regards to "not needing" a washer or "my Egg not coming with one," if you buy a NEW Egg...you'll get a washer. What you do with it is up to you.

Seeing how BGE specifically asks Tel-Tru to furnish washers with the thermometers they manufacture for BGE, someone must see a benefit.

After inquiring a week ago, I was asked by BGE customer service for my address so I assume the Mother Ship will be coming through with a replacement.

Thanks all for the ideas & suggestions!

great question, do you think I have it too tight against the dome? I appreciate the feedback.

take the clip off and toss it or put it in the drawer that you put useless objects in. eventually you will have a cook that interferes with the length of the thermo and you will shut the dome and bend it, big turkey cooks, dutch oven cooks etc
