There was a similar advice thread here just a few months ago (I may have started it, can't remember anymore).  Lots of recommendations for the Breville line, which I ended up purchasing.  I wish I'd sprung the extra $140 or whatever it was, and got next model higher with the air-fryer built-in, sounds like you're already planning on that.

I bought a GE from Walmart about 10 years ago. $50 or so. Still working. I've never toasted with it. Just reheating leftovers and I love the rotisserie! Spin a cornish hen on it and you'll get some good eats!

The Breville with convection and air fryer will prolly be hard to beat though! Though rather expensive.

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

All I’ve ever wanted from a toaster oven, is to toast both sides of the bread relatively evenly.

Bought 3-4 over the past decade or two, and they never quite performed well. Each crapped out after a few years. Bought this one a year or so ago, and we love it. A 1/4 sheet pan fits in it, and really opens up possibilities.

Bought this one for work, and it too works  quite well. But its smaller.

That's the one I got, @caliking.  I did not know a 1/4 sheet pan fits in it, that's another pan/rack I need to move from my "Save for Later" at Amazoid.  Thanks!

@caliking and @Botch I think that is the one my parents bought about a year ago. For a change it was Dad who wanted to go upscale. Having a second oven comes in handy around the holidays but they can’t run it and the microwave at the same time.

@Botch yes a 1/4 sheet pan fits. You can roast a whole chicken in it, among other things. It’s really a countertop oven, not just a toaster oven. Very handy to have, when you don’t want to fire up the big kitchen clock.

@Gulfcoastguy can they plug the Breville oven in to another circuit, or the microwave in to another one? Both on the same circuit is likely what trips the fuse or GFCI. At least that’s what happens when we run an electric kettle and another device on the same circuit in our kitchen.

Limited space in a galley kitchen though a larger galley than mine. The counter space dictates the layout.

I was especially happy to see how my Breville did nachos.
The in-wall oven in my house crapped out a couple years after moving in, and I was lucky to find an "open box" special at the local brick-n-mortar for $279 (I was hurting financially back then).  It was an extremely primitive "Magic Chef", had a temp control (50º off), a clock, a timer, and an interior light, nothing else.  The broiler was useless, even a single serving of nachos would have a line of burned chips/cheese down the center, and cold cheese/chips on the outsides.  Yuck.

I have the Breville pictured above and highly recommend it.  We cook whole chickens, toast reheat, etc.  it is fantastic for reheating leftover pizza.  I purchased a small enameled dutch oven that fits in it that I use for bread making.  We probably use it three times as often as the full size oven.  I agree with above, that I wish I had splurged and purchased the model with the air fryer.

What brand and size DO did you get? I bake a fair bit of bread, and would like to give it a shot in the Breville.

My countertop Breville is incredible. Expensive, but worth it. Look how even this toasts! I have the same one as the others mentioned, not the giant one but midsize for about $230. It fits quarter sheet pans in it and does the majority of our quick meal bakes.

@caliking - it’s a lodge enameled DO.  The bottom is labeled 1.4L, but the website calls it 1.5 quarts.

I half my normal DO bread recipe and it works like a champ.

1.4 liters equals 1.4793635 quarts according to my computer's conversion app.

We received a B&D convection toaster oven as a random wedding gift when we got married in 2010 (didn’t even register for one). My wife wanted to return it and we didn’t use it too much for the first few years of marriage. Once we had kids we started using it a ton and almost daily now.

While ours still works fine this thread now has me shopping for a new one, thanks guys!  =)

The Ninja caught my eye because it has the air fryer/dehydration modes and also folds up when not in use. Only issue is that the space inside is not tall enough so have to scrap this one.

The Breville Smart Oven Air with the air fryer/dehydration modes is on my short list for sure. We do have an oven with two doors, one being a smaller area inside which I use often. This thing just looks like it would give me a few more ways to skin a cat, including doing jerky and homemade fries/chicken strips in it. Much bigger but I really don’t want to get something that I’ll regret like I may with the Ninja’s lack of height.

Dang Man! Y'all sure know how to spend a man's money!
    $60 to $100 to $300 to $400 and it's frickin' enviable!!!

I'm putting in my pitch to SWMBO, but it does make sense, since it's the two of us to use a smaller, but better device...

I own the breville smart oven pro air. It is a great workhorse for when indoor cooking is called for. Hardly ever use my big clock box in the kitchen with the breville available.

Thanks for the info. Maybe a 2qt DO would also fit?

how big of a loaf can you bake in that DO? 300g? I usually bake a 500g loaf in a 5qt DO.

I suppose mine does not qualify..

Formerly known as the Black and Decker https://www.amazon.com/BLACK-DECKER-TO1313SBD-4-Slice-Toaster/dp/B00GGFHH4U/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=TO1313SBD&qid=1587961062&s=home-garden&sr=1-1

Having taken one apart... there's not much to these things.  Quartz elements are preferred.  Resistive heating elements and infrared have issues.  They really don't put much into these things.  If you use it like a routinely like a mini-oven it might be worth spending a more than bargain basement prices.

@caliking - the loaves I make in this DO are about 200 grams flour + the other stuff that I really don’t measure by weight.  Sometimes just water, yeast and salt.  But sometimes add raisins, cinnamon, sugar, etc.  I’m guessing I could go up to about 250 grams flour, but not much more.

I picked the DO I use by going to a Williams Sanomma outlet that had a ton of DO’s and the same breville I have.  I just kept grabbing the DO’s off the shelf and tried to fit them in the toaster oven untill I found one that fit.  I think you could find a 2qt that would fit if you take the knob off the lid.  That knob takes up a lot of verticle space and you could probably cover the hole in the lid with foil.

We have the Wolf toaster oven, it is really good, like a high quality oven on your countertop. My Lodge dutch oven fits inside for standard no knead breads.  We have the instant pot toaster oven/air fryer at our vacation place, it’s very good, I like the Wolf much more

My wife and I were considering buying a toaster oven to help out when we had small things to cook or wanted to reheat things a microwave would destroy.  After some research, we settled on a microwave/convection oven. We didn't want to give up counter space for 2 appliances and wanted a microwave for convenience.

We ended up with a GE Profile model that I gave to my brother. It was working just fine but when I replaced my range, they gave me another for free (Yes, I know the price was built into the range but I'd rather have the Viking that the GE).

We have a slightly lesser model of Breville, but still love it. Shouldn't go wrong.
