Egg Mates Question

Hey All, I just bought some egg mates and was wondering if any of you coated yours with sealant or a urethane for uv protection and the elements in general. I used spar urethane on my handle and considered the same for the mates. Thoughts? I have the acacia mates, if it matters...

I coated mine (though I forget with what!) on my now-sold medium Egg and was extremely happy with the results. Two years of use with zero signs of wear. They resisted weathering beautifully (even during bitter Canadian winters) and also keep foods and sauces from tarnishing them. I highly recommend going for it. You’ll be happy you did.

Thanks for the advice! I think I'll use spar urethane again like I did on the handles. Should I assume you only coated it once, or did you maintain it every few years?GrateEggspectations said:I coated mine (though I forget with what!) on my now-sold medium Egg and was extremely happy with the results. Edit: Just saw you had it only 2 years. Disregard my comment about maintenance. -
I coated it only at one time, though did many coats - probably 5 or so, with sanding in between. I should add that when not in use, I covered the Egg, which did provide additional protection for the mates.Anecdotally, I should share that years ago, my father in law gave me a nice set of wooden tables and chairs. He had also bought himself the same set. Upon receiving them, I applied a urethane. He did not. Fast forward to today, his are greyed and weather beaten. Mine look brand new, even though they’ve sat out all winter year over year (whereas his did not). It pays to coat.
