Clean Burn - Cleaning inside/out

Hey guys

just wondered how do you all clean your eggs? Inside and outside....

Any tricks or ways you do things? This includes all parts and accessories for the egg

i just steam cleaned the outer top part which was covered in baked on several year old grease

How did you steam clean it?

I use my egg a lot (several times a week on average) but I only do a complete high temp burn down rarely.  I will let all my lump burn out if I want to take the innards out and get the ash at the back of the egg out.  I've done that probably 3 times (including one high temp burn) in the last nearly 9mos.  So maybe once a quarter I'll make sure the innards are all clean and breathing good.

The outside I usually just wipe down with a towel while I'm cooking.  I did use a wire brush on my daisy wheel the other night and man it looks brand new!

Doing a clean burn and left the vents wide open!!! Haha. Torched my gasket and gave her an overbite! Easy to put out, just closed the vents and put the ceramic top on. The flames in the pic are low compared to when I first opened it.

  • I thought the gasket always gets crisped with a high temp clean burn

if not, what temps do you guys do for a clean burn and for how long and has it affected your gasket?

  • I'll typically let it rip around 600* for a couple hours. The Rutland gasket holds up fine.

  • I think I once let it burn at maybe 900f and there was blue smoke and when all was over the inside was white like a brand new egg lol
no flies in the neighborhood that night

No need to go that high.  550-600°F will burn off all organic material.  It just takes longer.

In cooking, often we implement steps for which we have no explanations other than ‘that’s what everybody else does’ or ‘that’s what I have been told.’  Dare to think for yourself.

  • JMO, but I find dedicated clean burns to be unnecessary if you are periodically cooking with relative high heat (great than 550 degrees f).  Too much risk of stuff breaking just clean your Egg.
