And blatant racism. Maurice’s was one of the most disturbing places during my time in SC.

Maurice passed a few years back. His family has made great strides to overcome the hate and hurt Maurice created. They have a ways to go as it weighed heavy for many years.

Here’s an interesting read about Maurice and his family that runs the business now. Feels more like sweeping under the rug more than great strides to me.

Agreed. In regards to tangible things though, what are these great strides? Taking down the confederate flags and removing the racist propaganda from the restaurants? Seems like it was because business was going down the tank.  Have they done anything to help the black community in SC? Are they creating new dialogue in the community about race relations? Scholarships for minorities? Anything?

When you won’t even acknowledge that your father was a white supremacist, how can you make great strides to move forward. Isn’t Step 1 admitting that you have a problem?

“Do you support white supremacy?” I asked.

“No! Of course not,” Lloyd said. “White supremacy is totally wrong—and my father was not like that. He was a Southerner and a South Carolinian. He enjoyed reading about the history and the heritage of America.” Lloyd had recently been to a friend’s funeral at a black church, and “two hundred people were there, and”—he chuckled—“ninety per cent of them were black, and that was fine.”

If Maurice embodies what it means to be a South Carolinian as Maurice’s son puts it, I’d be embarrassed to be one.

  • When i was there I saw people of color enjoying the food and some actually working there. Do you check the politics of every restaurant you eat at? Must cut down significantly on available options.

Man you just don’t get it. This guy was a terrible human being and tried to convert others to his way of thinking through his restaurants. Do you think being a white supremacist is okay because some black people ate at his restaurant? Good grief.

Also, no need to check when the confederate flag is flying high and you need to wade past racist hate propaganda to place an order.

They still have the racist’s face on the bottle. Yeah they’ve made a lot of progress.

I am against racism. Maybe we'd be better off to focus on things that unite us (like good BBQ) instead of divide us and leave the past behind. Only then can the healing begin.

Personally I just don’t care for Maurices pulled pork, so I haven’t been in a long time. Last time I went, I asked for a brisket sandwich assuming it would be tomato based sauce on there since it was beef. It came with mustard based. Lol.  But there are some really good other joints on the original poster’s link.
  • Scotts bbq is really good to me but I’ve only been to his newer place in Charleston. My parents bought a truck in Hemingway recently and keep going by the original restaurant. They love it too. Good whole hog pulled pork.

dang, wish i could remember the name of the place i stopped at, 4-5 years ago.  it was, mmm, modest? a couple of big old offset smokers out front, nothing to look at inside, but they put out some tasty cue.

this past summer we stopped at 12 bones, outside asheville NC.  very, very good ribs.

I’m a huge fan of Scott’s BBQ. Have had the opportunity to share a few beers with Rodney on a couple occasions. A great chef and an even better guy! His best cooking advice- “Cook for people that will be honest with you about your food and don’t be afraid of the heat!”
