Cast iron grill grate

Got a new cast iron grill grate. Any tips on how to season it?  Can this stay on the egg when not being used?  Not sure if it will rust easier. Thanks.

I've been having and using my cast iron grate for at least 5-6 years. All I ever do is scrape it clean and wipe with cooking oil or spray with Pam.
But I think the real secret is to use it often.
Here's a recent pic using my grate.

Al you can do is use it often. Trying to season it is futile; once you heat up the egg for a high temp cook, it will burn off any accumulated seasoning.

Personally, the cast iron grate is the most over rated accessory I have purchased.  The payoff in cooks was minimal to none and mine was corroding within 2 years and I threw it away. Since it has been gone I have not thought about it or missed it once .  Maybe my fault. Who knows. That being said, I hope you enjoy yours and get some good advice regarding its care.

All I have is the cast iron grate and I have been very happy with it. I scrape it off before a cook and have never had a bit of rust.

  • I really enjoy the cast iron, it rarely comes off my BGE. I don’t bother doing anything extra for seasoning (I do for my cast iron cookware).  Never had a bit of rust and it acts as a great base for the AR

@3Mdawg41 , where do you live?  The only fault I've seen with the CI grate is rusting, which I've never had a problem with (nor my Daisy Wheel), but I live in an arid environment.
It's all I use, and I use it flat-side up exclusively.  This has the added benefit of easy cleaning with a scraper, with no loose wire throat-pokers.  Yeah, there may be some food residue underneath, but it burns off and doesn't bother me.

High-Que makes an outstanding cooking grate; incredibly price, but may lass forever.
