Rutland gasket cement

Hey guys and girls. I have a question about the Rutland gasket and how to properly "glue" it to the egg.  I removed the lid and thoroughly cleaned the top and bottom lips. I waited a few hours to ensure any cleaning residue was dry. I put a bead of the cement that was included in the gasket packaging then spread it with a trowel. I then put the gasket down and lightly pressed it down with block of wood. I left the top off for a few days. When I went out to put the lid back on I noticed the cement didn't stick to the ceramic bottom lip. What did I do wrong?  Will I need to buy a new gasket or can I try to reuse this one?  Any help is greatly appreciated!
Thanks

You need to use permatex ultra copper as the adhesive

Rutland makes a good gasket, but lousy adhesive. Permatex is definitely the recommended stuff, mine's been on there for 10 years. Not sure what to do about the black stuff that's now stuck to the gasket.

Maybe @RRP will have a suggestion.

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

Oh, and if you use the Permatex, be sure to leave it alone to cure. Heat doesn't do it, just time... 24 hrs. And don't panic when you see the color. =) It turns brown before long, then black.

That crappy Rutland adhesive is a latex product! If you don't clean the ceramic real well any grease even slightly below the surface will not let the latex grab and bite the edge. Also it can dry out quickly if applied on a hot day or even in the direct sun. Permatex Ultra Copper on the other hand is formulated to adhere to metal so it easily sticks to your BGE edge. And as @CarolinaQ said it needs a 24 hour dry time.

  • Perfect thank you. I will try again 😁
  • could always flip the gasket over and use the clean side
