New Upper Dome Need HELP with Band Assembly

Desperate for KNOWLEDGEABLE help.  Please don't post if you don't really know what you are talking about.  I've been misled by too many people and it has cost me lots of $$$$$  My husband passed away, leaving me with his large Big Green Egg.  It was purchased in 2010, and the dealer has changed ownership, the new guy knows nothing, and doesn't carry any stock.  I was told yesterday by a salesperson about an hour from where I live that there is NO WAY to ADJUST THE LID, that overbite, underbite, misalignment don't happen????? Maybe he thought I had a different hinge assembly?  The bottom line is that I have to put my new dome lid on, and don't want to screw it up.  I had to take the EGG apart as my deck was rotting beneath it and had to be replaced.  I took the hinge assembly apart because I didn't know better (I couldn't find assembly instructions). I reassembled it (the way I thought it should be done).   When I went to lift the lid to light it, the dome fell out and smashed on the ground.  That's how I ended up here, many $$ later.  If anyone can direct me to instructions so I don't end up with another upper dome like this...

Sorry for your frustration. I would buy the new style band assembly while you're at it. It's much easier to adjust with the new style.

Where are you located? Maybe there's an EGGhead close that can help.

Lastly welcome. You'll quickly learn there is a wealth of knowledge here

  • I'm in Petawawa Ontario Canada, had an acquaintance I reached out to with one, got referred to someone else. I should have got the new hinge assembly, at the same time.  Again, should have had someone knowledgeable help me from the start...Thank you Colts Fan.  Shipping on this stuff from the U.S. is insane.  $125 CAD shipping alone to get the new dome lid.

If I'm understanding your second post, you now have experienced help installing the new bands and dome, correct? Otherwise, I have installed new bands on my large Egg and would be delighted to provide input.

Also, since you are rebuilding your Egg, consider realigning it in the nest. It is in the nest backwards. The crossmember at the base of the nest should be in the back, not in the front. It will be much easier to do before you install the new bands and dome.

Your Egg should be positioned in the nest like this:

  • No I don't have help with current band assembly. Looking for instructions.  I put the egg base in the nest like this because I wanted room for the screen to open without getting hooked up on anything.  This is the 3rd screen assembly I've had...I think this egg is cursed.

So sorry to hear about your husband.

You may have already found this:

    https://youtu.be/F82uidM3Ehk

When tightening the bolts that tighten the bands around the dome and base, tighten until the bolts bend. Don't worry, you will not crack the ceramics but tightening that much.

Re: the screen assembly, is it positioned with the mesh behind the sliding steel piece? What was the issue with the previous 2 screen assemblies?

The only Canadian eggheads I can think of off the top of my head are @Canugghead and @paqman . They may have tips regarding purchasing new parts, and may possiibly be able to put you in touch with an egghead close to you.

Lastly, don't ever push the egg when trying to move it. Always pull, otherwise it can tip over and break.

Replacing the band is the only way I’ve been able to fix my underbite problem. I just replaced them and it was the old style.  They didn’t have the new style in stock and I heard that the new style doesn’t open up as much (which may or may not be a good thing)

I live in Ottawa and purchase my parts from bbqing.com

    Good luck!

I'm assuming your new bands will be the redesigned version which help with the underbite problem.

My new bands came with installation instructions but this video does a much better job of showing the correct method.

The new bands installation instruction begin @ about 1:13 into the video. It is exactly how I installed mine.

The bands before this current version were somewhat adjustable, that older style is pretty much what it is. All you can do is make sure the bands are parallel to each other. Imo.

The new new design let’s you place the lid exactly where you want and tighten. Also very easy to open do to pivot point be moved. Good luck
  • Does this hinge assembly look upside down?

Does this hinge assembly look upside down?

No. The flat stock on the back always face upward. It’s right.

I won't attempt to give any advice on band but I may be able to help with getting a new dome.

Not sure if you know, Big Green Egg Canada HQ is just east of Ottawa, not that far from Petawawa https://goo.gl/maps/sQZe5V91F6vHz58J9  shipping should be cheaper or you can even pick up.

If you have proof of purchase, any good dealer should be able to request a compassion warranty on your behalf and you get 50% discount on the new dome if approved by BGE corporate. Have you tried contacting BGE Canada directly?

Let me know if you need further help with the dome.
