Great Steak, no thanks to Calvin & Hobbes...
I reverse seared a strip steak for lunch with a little DP Cowlick on it, put a couple of small chunks of hickory on the fire, kept it around 250° direct (I'm too lazy to mess with putting in and taking out the plate setter, so I usually do it direct with frequent flipping). BUT... I was reading a book of Calvin & Hobbes comics while I was doing the low-and-slow part, and I was laughing, and laughing, ... and didn't get back out there often enough to check the temp (too lazy also to use the Maverick remote thermometer), and it got away from me and got up to 120° internal, even 123° in a few places, and I was aiming for 117°. <sigh>
But I took it out, cranked the temp up to 600°-650°, and seared it for a minute a side, and it came out GREAT! A little more done than I prefer, but still delicious, and the hickory smoke was fantastic! It was one delicious steak!
Moral of the story: don't let Calvin & Hobbes distract you when you're Egging!

Big fan of Calvin and Hobbes so I can understnad how you got distracted. But if that outcome is distracted then you need to keep with the routine! Great cut, crust and finish. Nailed it from here.
Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. # 38 for the win. Life is too short for light/lite beer! Seems I'm livin in a transitional period. -

I've had the complete Calvin & Hobbes in my Amazon shopping cart for years, I think, but it seemed so silly, and was so expensive, that I just kept never actually buying it. But I just recently decided I'd just get the paperback version, which is cheaper, and then for some reason a few days later the price dropped another $10 or so, so I bought it.
I have just been LOVING those cartoons. That guy really was wonderful, and I'm happy I bought it. I'm going to get a LOT of laughter out of that set.
And fortunately it didn't distract me long enough to ruin the steak, just a tiny bit more cooked than I wanted.
I was amazed at how much difference the hickory made in the steak! It was very noticeable and delicious! I had thought it would have cooked too short a time to get much smoke flavor, but it was there, and delicious! I'm doing that every time from now on!
Thanks for the kind comments, everybody!

I have found that the most planned cooks don't always turn out the best. It's the ones that just happen which often really win. Sounds like you found that out too 😀
