ceramic lump reducer for XL
Scored a damaged KJ Jr. firebox, going to try using it as lump reducer (ceramic Vortex?) for my XL! May have to cut off the 'leg' to reduce the height.

Don't see why it wouldn't work.
Hack on, Gary! 😊

@marysvilleksegghead @caliking @caliking Thanks! the ceramic is very porous, it was almost like slicing with the masonry disc.

I can see that working great for a flat bottom wok!!

Been there!
Unfortunately, after several uses the intense heat cracked the bottomless wok. Hopefully this ceramic piece with expansion slit stands a better chance!

Finally got to try it, works well.
Started with Jr. firebox filled to top with leftover lump.
Raised direct Char Siu, followed by US Prime striploin, both low and slow.
Still have about 1/3 firebox lump left after several hours.

Nice, Gary! This is the way to go IMO for setting up 2 zones in an egg.#1 LBGE December 2012 • #2 SBGE February 2013 • #3 Mini May 2013A happy BGE family in Houston, TX.

@caliking True Ashish, although it works better with XL than L.

Anybody try a standard size Slow n Sear for a 22" Weber Kettle in an XL? Should fit...maybe.

Should fit. The XL shares the same charcoal grate size. I have always maintained that the XL is just a ceramic kettle. Part of what makes it so damn awesome.

My initial thought is this would act like a modified Arteflame.LBGE 2013 & MM 2014Die Hard HUSKER & BRONCO FANFlying Low & Slow in "Da Burg" FL

I talked with Dave the owner and he said it wouldn’t work, wrong shape. Fast forward a year and he’s got a kamado with it for sale 🤨HeavyG said:Anybody try a standard size Slow n Sear for a 22" Weber Kettle in an XL? Should fit...maybe.XL BGE, KJ classic, Joe Jr, UDS x2 -

@HeavyG my red neck slow n sear, you just reminded me to fabricate a deeper one, this is too shallow for long cooks. Taller fence will also define the two zones more distinctly.

Thanks for the good catch, I've yet to test that.NPHuskerFL said:My initial thought is this would act like a modified Arteflame.canuckland
