Egg Table Stain Removal

I built an egg table several years ago and have since been unhappy with my stain color of choice. It was also my first attempt at tiling a top for the egg. The tiles have started to fall off and it is time to do something different with the top.

I am looking to build a wood top to replace the tiled top. While doing that I am looking to refinish the base of the egg table which was made out of cypress.

Wanted the groups opinion on sanding the stain off the existing table and then likely varnish afterward. How difficult is it likely to be to sand far enough down to get to bare wood?

Personally I wouldn't take the time and effort necessary to sand down to bare wood. In the first place your doors appear to be plywood so you could ruin them by sanding off the outer veneer. It would be easier to just replace them. Why not consider painting your cart rather than sanding and retaining.

Painting does sound easier. The doors are actually solid wood, but have warped so was looking to replace them with new doors more of a frame and panel stile door.

There is an air gap under the stone, but you are saying I should have a further gap between the stone and egg?

Yes, always an air gap, even with a stone. Otherwise heat just transfers right on through the stone. Not my photo.
