Stainless Steel Bands

I know this has been discussed, but surely there is a source for stainless steel bands and hardware for our eggs. You can watch everything in my neighborhood corrode.
We lived in the panhandle for a while and there are a lot of boats from Orange Beach and Gulf Shores running around w/ bedazzled with stainless bands.

Take and original one and get it chromed?

Chrome won’t stop rust.
POR-15 should do it. Strip the old paint, clean the metal, prep for painting and finally, paint.
DO NOT use this stuff indoors or without ventilation! Just don’t. Used it indoors for just a few small car parts and had a headache for two weeks! Do not spill it on anything you care about. Use disposable foam “brushes” to apply. Once exposed to air, it tends to harden fairly quickly. I suggest doing all prep work in advance, then open the paint and have at it. Definitely not as easy as buying SS, but I’ve never heard of SS for the egg.
Since this will be exposed to UV, I think they recommend a finish coat. Also on Amazon.
I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

Sounds like a great business Op for CGS.

the vision grill i have has stainless bands. im just wondering if bge tried the ss and it didnt work well with the ceramic design where the bands mount, i used to have thermal expansion issues with really high temp cooks. bands would always loosen up on me, i believ ss expands at a greater rate

Chrome won't stop rust. It will prevent rust.

You may have to get them custom made. I doubt it will be cheap.
This guy has some interesting vids, and made those SS bands himself.

I don't think he has his Amazen Tube smoker in the right place.

You are correct. I looked this stuff up years ago and SS has a significantly higher coefficient of thermal expansion. They would need to redesign the ridges that hold the band in place to be higher so the band would not separate from the hemispheres. Or some kind of tensioner.

I knew there had to be a reason there wasn't a stainless option. I guess that's why he has the springs.

I'm dubious about springs having the ability to keep enough tension on the bands...they would need to be stout

with the high temp pizza cooks i was doing back then, the dome was barely balancing in the ring, they do make dome clips now but thats not nearly enough support for what i was seeing. i dont see those springs doing much, i was tightening the band down at temp and bending that band clip as it cooled down. stainless would just be dangerous at high temps with the current design, and it losses strength quickly at a much lower temp

I imagine @tjv long ago considered SS bands. Perhaps he’ll chime in.

The problem with stainless vs carbon steel is stainless has less tensile strength or give. Whether that makes a difference in the long run I don’t know.

Thanks, I'll give it a whirl at fabricating my own.
If any one sees other options, keep me posted

There is an inherent love affair for stainless in grilling. When it comes to bands, I am not on the stainless band......wagon.
Out of the box, the stainless bands look great. Throw some smoke, grease, acidic bbq sauce on them and after a period that shine will dull. Sure, you can clean them but it's going to be a constant battle to keep clean, especially that small crevice between top of band and grill.
Carbons steel with black finish is the best solution. It is economical, shows dirt the least and go reasonably well with current kamado colors: green, red, gray, blue. One problem with EGG's black finish is the nuts......the black finish peels off easily when tightening the nuts.
With regard to producing stainless with similar tensile/coefficients to carbon, my hunch is a solution is possible. It would just take some time and experimentation to get it right.
The handle clips are mentioned here. Charwoody came up with band clips 15+ years ago. Took 15+ years, but EGG helped themselves to that idea too.

Get a KJ pro joe. Saw one in a local store the other day the bands are like half inch thick stainless as well as multiple other parts being stainless.
-
KJ used to sell their "standalone" versions of the Classic and Big Joe sans cart but in return you got stainless bands and a stainless daisywheel. Pretty sharp looking.

Agree the one I saw was super nice. $3499 with the meatball and shelves though.

I remembered reading this post when I saw this egg on Facebook marketplace. Looks like this guy has a stainless band: https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/246835930540799/?ref=search&referral_code=marketplace_search&referral_story_type=post

I believe those are from a Vision Kamado. It's very low grade stainless steel. They also rust and corrode in my area and show the grime and rust more than stock bands. But I'm sure they will work fine.Thank you,DarianGalveston Texas -
queue discussion beween martensitic and austenitic stainless steels and contrast that to low chromium content steels.....______________________________________________I love lamp..
