Interesting - I wonder if that will fit in an egg??
@stlcharcoal - any idea?Memphis, TN

As someone who overengineers stuff all the time, I respect it. As someone who thinks the product coming off his egg is pretty darn good, I'm looking forward to hearing someone say this thing provides sufficient incremental benefit to justify its existence. Lack of incremental benefit historically hasn't been a cure for a case of The Wants. But this thing looks like yet another solution in search of a problem. Except for the smiley face. Need me some of that.
And who cooks with that teeny amount of lump???It's a 302 thing . . . -
I have a huge heat shield made from 1/2" steel plate that solves the problem.

@stlcharcoal - any idea?I don't see why it wouldn't. The first piece down appears to be that large scallopped ring. Looks like it has enough slack to fit over the BGE firebox just as easily as the KJoe one. (I actually think they design their things that way because there is a significant market for their accessories to BGE owners and other knockoffs). To @HendersonTRKing point, I think it solves a valid problem. When I'm cooking one piece of meat it isn't an issue but when I'm stuffing the egg with 3 shoulders, two briskets or as many racks of ribs as I can squeeze on the thing... I really have to pay attention to protecting the pieces of meat with direct exposure because after 10+ hours those sections are trashed. Not bark... just dry hard blackness.LBGE/Maryland -

i hang my smaller pizza stone down lower with the spider, that extra space above the stone with tjv's setup seems to solve the problem well enough, even with 34 pounds of butt and brisket in there. i dont see it working better with this setup in fact sometimes i setup for a hotspot on purpose

We've come a long way from cooking a rabbit on a stick over a fire of gathered wood started by lightening in a grill of rocks on the ground.

I guess SloRoller makes for a zingier name than "hyperbolic insert".

They come with the Classic and Big Joe Gen III's. The new III's are 4-5" higher than the Gen I and II's. So, while the insert may work, the issue is going to be the racking system. The D&C system that comes with the III's is a THREE level system designed to sit on cast pedestals on the insert. So I don't know if there's enough room to close the lid with that new D&C in the previous KJ's or the LBGE. I highly doubt you can in the XLBGE. (I believe KJ FAQ's have a typo about the compatibility.)
If the insert DOES fit in the Egg, and the racks do NOT, then I'm sure you could engineer a double racking system using the SmokeWare swing stacker or with some lag bolts.
I'll try to jack around with them this weekend and report back.

I like the look of that thing. Agree rib tips on a full egg or a long brisket are at risk without extreme care.
If this deflects low temp better and adds more smoke it sounds great... up until the Teflon coating poisons you

Huh? Looks like someone else's way to try to make my money his. Guess I don't understand what this does. Or why I want it to do it.
I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

@Carolina Q the improved air flow and movement should provide better bark, eliminate the hot spot in the back and around edges, and significantly improve multi tier cooking by providing more even air flow.
It's pretty significant if it works as designed.XL, Small, Mini & Mini Max Green Egg, Shirley Fab Trailer, 6 gal and 2.5 gal Cajun Fryers, BlueStar 60" Range, 48" Lonestar Grillz Santa Maria, Alto Shaam 1200s, Gozney Dome, Gateway 55g Drum -

Haven't tried it on the BGE yet.......but
The hyperbolic "SloRoller" that comes with the Gen III KJ Classic, will work in the Gen II KJ Classic, with the original two level Divide and Conquer system. You can only use the top level.
Will report back on the Large BGE. Might be awhile before I can compare the XLBGE and Big Joe though.

In the Large BGE......
There's a bit of an issue. The new multi-piece fireboxes from KJ are higher/deeper than the BGE ones, so they got rid of the fire ring. If you have a fire ring in the BGE, then the hyperbolic insert DOES fit, but you're limited on options what goes above it (not much room.)
The top plate of the hyperbolic since about an inch above the felt line. The two or three level D&C system does not fit (you can't close the lid). The Woo and the Smokeware grid raiser do not raise the grid high enough above that plate. You could use some long lag bolts and fender washers (placing them in just the right spots on a dedicated grid), but you're going to be pretty high in the dome at that point and I don't know if you can close the lid on a 18" grid.....might have to drop to the 15", but then the bolt idea isn't going to work.
Other option, BGE makes (or used to make) a lower profile fire ring for the large.....for use with the three level spinning rack. I believe that system got discontinued when the Eggfringer came out, so I don't know if the ring is still around. If you had one of those 2" fire rings, then you could use the hyperbolic with some sort homemade raised grate and possible the 2 level D&C that comes with the classic Gen II. You're going to be into this set up for at least $300, so not sure sure if it's worth it.
My Big Joe III's haven't shipped yet, so when I get them I'll report back how everything works in the XL. With how short and squat the XL BGE's I can almost guarantee it's not going to work in there without pulling the fire ring altogether.....then it's going to be the same issue of getting a grate to stand up in there.

Wow @stlcharcoal that’s great info! Thanks for the rundown.
LBGE/Maryland -
Do you think you could remove the fire ring on the BGE and put the hyperbolic directly on the BGE large firebox?
Memphis, TN
LBGE, 2 SBGE, Hasty-Bake Gourmet -
Probably not, but I'll check. I would have earlier but my large BGE was filled up with charcoal.
Even if it does fit, I don't think the BGE firebox will hold enough charcoal to sustain a low and slow.
-
I rarely ever load my awesome and superior Rockwood past the transition between the fire ring and fire box. There’s at least a good 10 hours below the ring imo.

Try the BGE Pizza stone in XL for a good indirect cook shield it only has about 1-2 inches on sides

@stlcharcoal did you ever try and fit one in a xl?“There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body.”

Now they make a shorter one for the gen2's. That would be the one to try. Otherwise, I don't think you'd have the height, at least in an XL. The KJ BJ-III is something like 9 inches taller than a XL BGE.
