OT: Mosquito solutions?
Has anyone found a good way to repel or decrease you mosquito populations in you outdoor living space? We live in west TN and it gets to where I don’t want to go outside they get so bad. Have tried thermocells without really noticing the results so just looking for other suggestions.

My pest control company sprays for mosquitoes monthly during the season. Seems to work ok

Years back I had a client who sold misting systems and one of his systems was a bug sprayer that was installed on the fence around the yard. Depending on your yard size that could be an answer. Being that I'm in FL I just stay indoors unless I'm coated in OFF.

You can move to Arizona, New Mexico, Southern California, or Nevada. These are the areas of the U.S. with the least mosquitoes.

Check out the cutter spray. Works pretty well for us- spray it 2-3 over the year. Make sure to spray bushes and low tree leaves-

Old legend says eating raw garlic everyday repels them. Of course it repels people too....

We are west TN also, so I feel your pain. We have terminix spray once a month during mosquito season and it works fairly well. I’d say we get an 90% reduction. Also use citronella candles on top of terminix.
I have a neighbor who swears by this. It seems to work in her back yard, but I haven’t tried it.

The skeeters here will carry away small children if you're not careful. I've used the following for mosquito control:
- Propane fogger= You have to fog weekly (sometimes twice weekly for it to be effective. Fogging is a bit of a pain - there you are, walking around in clouds of insecticide, early on a weekend morning. Meanwhile, your neighbors think your property is on fire and are about to call 911. Worked well, if you kept up with it.
- Misting system= Nozzles spray a mist of insecticide along the perimeter of the property, and along the eaves of the roof, twice daily. I set it up with a smart plug so i can control it over wifi. A float switch sends me a text and email when the insecticide level in the drum is low. This has worked the best, but it has been difficult to keep the system operational. It's now 15yrs old, and may need a new motor to be up and running consistently again. It's expensive to install (previous owner's put it in), and has been somewhat pricey to maintain.
- All kinds of torches, candles, Thermacell, etc. that didn't work very well.
This year, I'm going to spray Bifen around the perimeter of the house and the fenceline and see how it goes. If it's not as effective as the misting system, I'll fix that and stick with it, as it has worked the best for me.#1 LBGE December 2012 • #2 SBGE February 2013 • #3 Mini May 2013A happy BGE family in Houston, TX. -

after you survive black fly season in maine, the mosquitos arent too bad i dont think the bats and tree swallows in the yard put in the slightest dent to the population. bug spray is a must near the water unless its windy
fukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it -
I'm opposed to spraying because it's not selective and kills a lot of pollinators. Try Mosquito Dunks - little cakes or pellets that you put in standing water that can't be drained like ditches. It's bacteria that kills larvae but harmless to fish, mammals, birds and humans.

Myself and most everyone in my neighborhood has a Mosquito Magnet. They work okay and are by no means a day 1 fix. The purpose of these bad boys is to wipe out a nest which could take 7 to 14 days. They also work best if you move them around from time to time because the CO2/octenol cloud only covers about 1 acre at a time (if memory serves me correct).

The construction workers building the casinos in Tunica would wear kerosene soaked rags around their ankles in the summer time. It’s brutal along the rivers.

could try planting some of these around property perimeter

Might try a citronella this spring, although I only get a bite or two per night, living here (and I love watching the bats as the sun goes down, so I've got them too)___________"When small men begin to cast big shadows, it means that the sun is about to set."

@caliking If you’re going to spray Bifenthrin, I’d spray down the whole yard. That’s how I do it anyway. I get the perimeter real good and then spray down the whole yard. It has real good residual as well. It has worked well for me. Mosquitoes live in the grass and just getting the perimeter will only kill the mosquitoes on the perimeter. You will still have a yard full of them.
My favorite insecticide to use is Permethrin. It’s unreal on mosquitoes. Spray the yard down at sundown and you will be amazed at the amount of bugs flying out of the grass and dropping. Just don’t tell the neighbors you’re using agricultural insecticides!
I would say the lack of insects in my yard is the best in town ha. Sometimes I even find dead birds. Worms pop up after a rain and the birds go crazy. Some don’t make it.NW IOWA -
The City Parks Department fog the neighborhoods once a week in the summertime. They do it at night when the mosquitos are most active. Works well.
