My son and daughter-in-law are in Ottawa for a family funeral, and we are spending the evening in their Boston apartment as my wife has appointments at MGH in the morning. Tried to get a reservation at one of the many fine restaurants, but everywhere was booked. Called an audible and stopped at Wegmans on the way through. The menu is:

- A Wagyu strip for us to split
- Sautéed Brussels sprouts with pancetta and garlic
- Oven roasted Romanesco
- Blueberry galette with Breyers Natural Vanilla ice cream for dessert.

I will be drinking a bottle of Duckhorn Three Palms Merlot, and my wife will enjoy a nice 2019 vintage Brita ice water (she doesn’t drink).

Started by making the pastry for the galette and put it into the fridge to chill.

Seasoned the strip with kosher salt, pepper, and included some rosemary in the bag before putting in to the hot tub at 132 F.

If you ask me, it   looks like you're doing way better than those fine restaurants.

Wishing your wife well for whatever takes her to MGH.

Thanks Ash. She has severe asthma and all the side effects that come from chronic high dose prednisone.

Washed the pastry with heavy cream and sprinkled with Demerara sugar, and into the oven she went.

    Crab cake appetizer

Followed Paula Deen’s recipe, very flavorful but didn’t hold together very well.

Deglazed the pan with some bone broth, thickened with a little cornstarch and added some baby bellas.

    Outstanding meal.

Go for it. I only went eggless because my sons apartment only allows gas grills and I couldn’t bring up my Mini-Max.

    @NDG,

Outstanding looking meal. I’ve never thought of putting onions on a loaded potato, will have to give that a try.

  • After seeing the lengths you go to for your date, I’ve got just one question for you....

Will you be my valentine in 2020?

Jokes aside, sorry to hear about your son and d-i-l’s family funeral. Ottawa was just hit with a ton of snow!! This is after high temperatures and quite a bit of melting...

Thanks for the sentiments - my daughter-in-laws grandfather passed away last week, services are tomorrow. She and the baby are flying back Monday, my son is driving back Sunday as he has to work Monday. Hopefully the roads are ok for him.

  • Pretty sure you weren't going to do that well on whatever restaurant you were trying to get into. If that's an audible I'd like to see what happens when you have time to plan. Great work all the way around!
