Refinishing marble slabs??

I have two slabs of marble that my father got over 30 years ago (IIRC) and we've been using them for side tables for grills (and now my BGE) ever since then. Thing is, since they've been exposed to the elements for all those years (first FL and now NH) they're showing the effects. Some discoloration as well as not being even close to smooth.
Does anyone have a reasonable [home] method to 'refinish' or 'refurbish' these slabs? Without measuring them, I'd say they're probably about 10" x 20" x 1" (or 1-1/2") each. I want to use them as inserts in the table that I hope to be making come spring. So being able to treat them somehow to get them to withstand the elements would be nice. Of course, I could probably do something to cover the egg, and table, but they will still be exposed to the elements while the egg is in use.
If it's not 'safe' or 'smart' to do this without lots of gear, then if anyone knows a place that would get them back to nice condition (within reasonable drive of Pelham, NH) I want to know.

Large BGE with CGS Woo Ring, stone with stainless pan, Smokeware chimney cap, Kick Ash basket and Kick Ash can.
Living free in the 603 (Pelham).

You can buy a diamond grinder on Amazon for around $150 with the whole spectrum of grits.  Hook a hose up, plug it in and run through the grits.  I get (mildly) electrocuted every time I use mine, which makes me not like to use it.  I've since picked up an air wet-polisher.

There are some great youtube how to's on refinishing. I watched one recently on doing the same thing to stainless. As Nola said above running through the grits small to large is the ticket. You will probably finish by wet sanding with extremely fine grit.

i would be tempted tp try an orbital sander on it, maybe try the backside first. don kennet inc in lawrence would probably have the sanding pads with grits down to 4000, i might try 2000 grit and see how it goes. i would not go for perfection with marble on a grill.  stoneone in methuen might do it, they have all the real equipment and do most of the stone cutting and polishing in the area. they also have lots of drops in the back yard of different stones. worth a call.
