Need to remove lid on my Large BGE...what's the easiest method?

I'm just about finished with building my new BGE table (large) and I'm getting ready to transfer the Egg from the Nest to my table.  To lighten the load I plan on removing the inside components but was also considering removing the lid.  What is the best/easiest method on removing the lid?  I've looked at my installation manual (it was assembled by the store that I purchased it from last summer) and from what I can tell all I would need to do is loosen the bolt on the top compression ring (between the springs on the hinge) and then just lifting it out of the compression ring.  Any risk or warnings in doing it this way?

Thanks for any feedback.

I had to do this a few years ago when I built my table. If I recall, I think i zip-tied the two bands together, once I loosened it, to keep the spring from flinging the rings apart...

You will have to realign the hinges when you put it back together, also make sure you get the band bolt tight, bolt bent tight when you reassemble. If you have a buddy that can help you toss it in with out removing the top it might save you some time.

I left the dome on when I put my large in the table.  Get 2 people, weight is manageable.   Effort into removing is a waste of time, IMO.

Took out the firebox and ring tho.

  • Thanks folks for the thoughts.  I'm leaning towards leaving the lid on also.  Nolaegghead.....sorry for the Saints loss.  That sucks but I'm a Vikings fan and I've felt your pain! :)

@jnovakbge    Just did this several times by myself when building my stainless table. Have also done it with my XL. Lid up remove springs and gently close lid. Lid down, remove the the bolts for the hinge bracket from the lid. No need to touch the band bolts. Make sure the lid is aligned before you loosen the brackets. Once they are off, remove lid. When you are ready to reinstall, replace lid and align. Replace brackets and tighten bolts in a cross pattern going from bracket to bracket a little at a time. Lift lid, reinstall springs. In the open position there is no tension on the springs old or new hinge. I have both. Doing it this way I have never had to readjust.

I would agree just leave it on. I don't know if this is true for the new hinge...but with the old hinge you had to either remove the springs or use zip ties or something to hold it in the closed position. Otherwise when you loosen the bolts without the weight of the lid the band could spring open.

Which came first the chicken or the egg?  I egged the chicken and then I ate his leg.

if you do it in one piece with the dome open, put something on the lower shelf to insert the egg on as you drop it into support it half way. that way you can regrip it and lower the rest of the way. 2 people and the one grabbing thru the lower vent needs to be wearing gloves. ive seen a stack of pillows used when dropping thru the hole in the table.

some people have a hard time readjusting the dome, i dont so its open the dome and pry the springs off, remove bolt band upper, remove dome. readjust later when retightening upper band which for me is prying the hinge band up with a screw driver while tightening the upper band bolt

My preowned xl had bent hinges when I got it. Once I straightened the brackets and hinges back to where they were meant to be my springs no longer had tension in the fully open position. That is how my new egg was assembled and delivered from the dealer. Now I don't have to pry them off.

Some people buy "pot lifts" to move their egg in the table:

I did the same but regular old used cargo straps.

I am, first things first. Have @tarheelmatt tighten the bolts or not, then after a few bourbons open the lid. Make sure someone is there to catch it...

Thank you, kind Sir, for keeping my memories alive!  That picture was from  the first time in two years back in 2006 and 2007 for wining 2 Large BGEs plus $1,000 both years in a grilling contest in Morton, IL

  • I would not do it. I took mine off following the video to replace gaskets and wished I hadn't. My band was bent just enough I couldn't get back together and I had to buy a new band.
