Weber wax starter cubes - lighter fluid?

I picked up a pack o Weber branded wax starters cubes to use with my egg. There are lots of older discussions on the forum saying that they are a-ok but upon opening the cubes they smell very similar to lighter fluid to me. Do we know if Weber has changed the ingredients or maybe it's just the wax smell that I am mistaking for lighter fluid? I obviously don't want to use anything that could damage the grill.

  • i have used hundreds of these in my egg with no problem at all. Currently using rutland fire starter squares but  these are absolutely fine.

Parrifin is a petroleum product in the end.  Black smoke.

It's not liquid so I wouldn't worry too much about it.  You're not going to damage anything.
  • Thanks! Off to the egg I go. Nothing like baby backs and tenderloin steak for Christmas Eve :) I have only used the Rutland squares until today.

Rutland makes fireproof gaskets AND fire starter squares?

    Mind blown.

Are they separate divisions of the same company with exclusive distribution?  I've never seen RRP hawking the squares?

Like the Weber cubes. Just keep the dome open till cube completely flames out or it will smoke really bad. But they all smoke bad if the flame goes out before it’s completely burned out.

Unless you have a 10 year old bottle,  no such thing anymore.  MAP Pro is in the yellow bottles now......just 100F hotter that the blue propane for 2x the cost.
  • The Weber cubes are good. Just let them burn all the way as mentioned. I use about 10 boxes a year

Never tried the Weber cubes. Tumble Weeds work great, but as stated before, let them burn completely before closing the egg.
I drink cheap beer so I can afford good bourbon.

Hmmm, I've always closed the Egg (top and bottom vents 100% open) as soon as the cube is lit; will have to try it the other way.

I don't know WHEN, but I'm certain the formula did change.
The cubes are now easier to light.
But they provide the same easy start.
I use 'em in the Weber Chimney to get a roaring blaze going in no-time.
  • The Weber cubes do light super easy, and I prefer them over the Rutland squares.  The squares took a while to get going and seemed to smoke a lot more!

One side benefit if you close the dome before the cube finishes burning and you now see a whole lot of smoke-you get a free leak test of the dome to base seal.  FWIW-

I tried the wax/wood fiber starters when I first got my BGE. It took three cooks to get the stink out of the Egg. I just use a propane torch now. Quick and easy and no stink.
