the warden has tasked me with finding a cocktail to enjoy through the holidays.  I'm predominantly a brown liquor man, but we enjoy it all.  what are your favorites?

I'm a believer that simple is usually best.  My cocktail of choice is the greyhound.  Fresh squeezed grapefruit juice mixed with vodka.  Add a little ice.  You can't beat it.  Some folks put sugar on the rim of the glass, but I don't.  Or you can put salt on the rim of the glass, but then you have a salty dog instead of a greyhound.

    @Hub that’s a great drink. I like cranberry and Tito’s.

    Bakers 7 year.  Neat.

    Hot Apple Pie:
Tuaca, hot apple cider, cinnamon stick, top with whipped cream.

That’s what my wife likes to make around the holidays.  I’ll have one but stick with my usual drinks for the most part.

We usually get a case of Ruby Red Grapefruit. Usually a group selling them to make money for something. For some reason it slipped by us this year.

I enjoy a fresh squeezed grapefruit and Tito’s vodka. Hard to beat and so simple. Cheers.

Just drink good champagne for the duration or change it up with champagne cocktails.  Quite easy.

we are loaded for bear with bubbles for the big day. Starts early (although now that my kids are 20-somethings they aren't exactly jumping on my nads at 5:30 am screaming about their presents anymore). Goes until nap #1, then immediately starts again until nap #2 or just power through.

Pro Tip to newer dads of young boys: sleep in a cup Christmas Eve. Those little feet have pinpoint accuracy.

  • Whiskey sours all year long. I have a recipe that slays what I’ve had barside.

    Kentucky mules are also fun.

    I make both with bourbon.

You probably won't want to buy these ingredients just to make one cocktail when you don't really know whether it will be worth it or not because you've never tasted it.  But for what it's worth, especially if you happen to have these things around, you asked for our favorite holiday cocktail, and for Christmas this is it.  I hate the name, but it's probably not worth explaining.
    Merry Magnificent Bastard
    2 ounces Bulleit bourbon
1 ounce Domaine de Canton (ginger liqueur)
    1/8 ounce Laphroaig 10-year scotch
2 dashes Fee Brothers Whiskey Barrel Aged Bitters

    DIRECTIONS:
Combine all ingredients in a mixing glass filled with ice. Stir vigorously for 20-30 seconds. Strain into ice-filled rocks glass.

    NOTES:
"Invented by mixologist Bryan Swanson and is wonderfully warming and all kinds of festive."
It's just delicious!  That tiny bit of Laphroaig gives it a smoky savor that, combined with the ginger and the bourbon, is really good.  The bitters is not the same as Angostura.  It's similar, but I've never tried it with Angostura, and I truly don't know whether it would be as good, or even very good.  I like this so well, I wouldn't want to change anything.

This is a simple one, which was good for drinking during the annual Grinch viewing (drink every time they say "who").  B)

    4 cups Cranberry Juice Cocktail
    2 cups Vodka
    2 cups prepared Lemonade
    2 cups Ginger Ale (chilled)
Garnish suggestions: sliced citrus fruit, fresh cranberries, mint leaves
    Cincinnati, OH
    Large BGE
  • Wow!  Thanks for all of the suggestions.  I’ll have her look these over and pick a couple.

I usually stick with man-drinks, like pure grain alcohol with pepper spray garnished with raw beef chunks and lutefisk in a lead cup.

Full disclosure I didn’t know what lutefisk was until I heard it on Frozen. Thank you Google.

    Now to the holiday drink

ours this year is la croix crab raspberry, splash of cranberry juice, gin and a rosemary sprig. Aaaand the panties drop.

I actually don't mind the taste, it's just that it slides down your throat before you can swallow it, I couldn't handle that.  Just one feature of my Norskie background I'll just have to leave at the door...

Just watched a Brunch at Bobby's - he either wastes a lot of booze or has an external liver to help filter it.

    Apple comfort

4 ounces best quality bourbon(he used Woodford)

4 ounces apple brandy, such as Calvados

    2 tablespoons maple syrup

Few dashes apple bitters, such as Bar Keep

    8 ounces hard cider, cold

He went heavy on Woodford, a little light on apple brandy and used about half that much hard cider - He had the better part of 3/4 of that in his glass...Might not be a good choice for a session, that's a one and done for most.

    Respect.
