FROZEN EGG!!!

A couple weeks ago in Indiana we experienced some high winds and were in a high wind advisory for a day or so. The green egg cover blew off without me knowing it. We then experienced an inch of rain followed by freezing temps. Just before we had the high winds, I replaced my gaskets. This morning I went to get the egg ready for a slab of ribs and butt and found the lids frozen shut. I didn't want to force apart as I didn't want to jeopardize my new seal that still hasn't seen warm temps. So after some breakfast and coffee I came up with the idea of a hair dryer. Took about 15 minutes and the ice glaze started melting off the outside of the egg, another ten minutes and the dome and base separated without issue or messing up the new gasket. LOL. Looks like my egg was trying to commit suicide, but I assure each of you that it is a hair dryer. Meanwhile, my cover is frozen to the deck, we are suppose to get back in the thirties in a couple days and I should then be able to recover the egg cover. This is only the second time in four years that the cover has blown off.

If you use starter cubes you can open draft door place one inside and light- it will start the charcoal from the bottom. Melts the ice and problem solvedGreensboro, NC

Thanks!!! Hopefully I am not in this situation again, but great idea, I need to pick up some starter cubes. I use a chimney and newspaper to start my fire, but I can see where having some cubes on hand could come in handy.Wolfpack said:If you use starter cubes you can open draft door place one inside and light- it will start the charcoal from the bottom. Well played sir! Hopefully the wife didn’t see you heading outside with her hair dryer!South of Columbus, Ohio.

Just dump some lit lump from the chimney into the egg, no need to buy fire starters for twice in four years incidents! If the ceramic cap was also frozen to the dome, I'd pour hot water sparingly to minimise thermal shock, it'll transfer heat faster than hot air.canuckland

Thanks to everyone for the great ideas, twice the cover has blown off, only once the dang thing was frozen shut. LOL
