Mold?

Is this normal? How do I get it off? I cranked the heat up to 500F, but didn't seem to burn it off (yet)... I threw the daisy wheel into the charcoals, tried to use a ball of foil on the dome -- it made it better -- but I can still see some of the white stuff...

Backstory is that it's been raining, and my work schedule changed, I haven't used the BGE in a couple months. Open it up today and see that...

Burn it off. Let the egg cool down and clean the egg and grates with the aluminum foil and then do another clean burn. I had to do it a couple months ago on my rarely used XL.

Good Lord! I was out of town for three (summer) months a while back and mine had some mold - but nothing like that!! Burn it off and cook more often!

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

*bows head in shame and walks off*

I'll see what it looks like tomorrow morning, I'll clean it up and fire it up again.

    Thanks

Yep, this year my XXL has molded up quite frequently. It happens. Forget to clean it out after cooking and it happens more frequently.

Those of you who've had mold...do you not end each cook with running up to high temps before shutting it down?

I never do that. Never heard of anyone else doing it either. Waste of lump. And the only mold I've ever had took three summer months out of town.

I never run it hot after I'm done.

I scrape the grates clean, put in the daisy wheel, shut down the grill.

This is my first mold in... 3+ years with the egg.

As above regarding how to get rid of it but this has been quite a wet spring/summer around here.  I recently returned from almost three weeks of no egging, figuring to open 'em up to mold but none present.  Contrary to many here I do use a cover and while they are outside, they are under a roof.  FWIW-

Had to de-mold my XL a couple weeks ago.  It happens.

I’ve had mold issues to deal with this year as well. I’m pretty sure the above average wet weather this year is the culprit. As mentioned above just burn it off and clean up with aluminum foil.

I have never experienced mold in my XL, but I cook on it regularly. I almost always let temp go up after each cook for about 30 minutes before snuffing it out.

451 Fahrenheit doesn't cut it.  (remember the book?).

Crank it to 600-700. 30 minutes should do it.

I grow mold in my large that gets less use.  The gasket is also nonexistent which only speeds along the process.  Installing the newly acquired Rutland should help.

Mold needs moisture and food to eat.  Clean the egg of food before leaving it for long periods in humid conditions.  Mold can be cleaned by burning it up - no bleach is necessary.  Just needs high enough temps and time to burn up all the organic material inside the egg (500ºF or above works fine).  Mold on the gasket will not get enough heat to burn up and other methods will be needed for the gasket.
