Blackstone Griddle Mold

Opened my stainless lid on my Blackstone the other day after a few weeks of no use and noticed mold on the griddle surface. So I scraped it off and off came the seasoning in several places. Turned up the heat to high and let it sit for 5-10minutes. Then reseasoned with veg oil. Am I good to go cooking on it again or do I need to take any other measures to ensure we don't get sick. I did not detect any other mold anywhere else.

You should be fine. The mold is unlikely to make you sick even without being cooked.

Do you have a soft cover on it too? My eggs would get mold in them if covered, do I ditched the covers a long time ago .

Lick the mold and if you don't die after a couple days, it's probably safe.

It would be much safer to have your wife do that.

do you re-coat with oil after each use?

I've gone about two weeks with no mold (under stainless and soft covers)

I would think one could just turn on the burners for ~10 minutes, apply a thin coat with veggie oil, then wipe down with a damp rag to remove any funk.

    then cook..

Yes I put a light coat of oil each time and then remove excess after 10min or so

  • Same happened to me this last weekend with all the rain lately. Just turned on the Blackstone, cooked the mold off, wiped down with oil and cooked breakfast without any problems

Word of advise, do not forget to clean and then place the cover over your BS!

I just stripped the seasoning and rust off mine and re-seasoned.

Ya, I just scraped all the mold off, turned up the heat for any residual and then oiled it and let it cool down overnight. Then last night cooked some bacon. Nobody died or got sick so I guess we are in the clear. We've had tons of rain as of late so I'm just assuming that was the cause since it hasn't happened until just recently.

I didn't think you were stupid enough to follow something that was obviously hyperbole, if that exonerates me in any way...

Mold grows on the grease/fat. Clean it really well. Although others will disagree, I do not recommend oiling cast iron. The fats break down and mold grows. A good solid seasoned griddle doesn’t need oil. My experience comes from the Boy Scouts. My pops was a Scoutmaster for 30+ yrs. We seasoned countless frying pans and dutch ovens over the years. Every new assistant Scoutmaster always knew everything about cast iron and would insist on oiling it. The oiled stuff was always moldy when we went camping the next month. My pops and I quit arguing with them and let them learn for themselves. We’d kick back and laugh when they had to clean mold out of the chuck box when we arrived at camp.

I have a Griswold pan that I’ve had for 17 years and I’ve never oiled it.

Seasoned vs oiled.  Two different animals.  If finished with oil, it must be a thin coat taken to high temps.  Hence, seasoned.
