Chipped glaze

Ok, kinda bummed. One of my eggs is a small. It’s great btw for just the wife and I cooking chicken breasts or sausages and the like.

Anyhow, I had it sitting in the small nest for about 3 years now from when it was brand new. I decided to custom cut out a stainless prep table to use as an egg table and for my propane burner. . (Making a stainless outdoor kitchen).

Anyhow when I tried to left the egg from nest it was glued in place solid. I took a rod and placed it behind one of the four fingers that hold the egg in place and pried it out to break it loose. I assumed the rubber piece was melted to the egg. It was and with a pop it took the glaze with it. All four fingers pulled the glaze off the bottom half it my egg. The glaze that came off is still stuck to the rubber caps on the nest fingers.

My question is this, is the exposed ceramic going to be a problem in the winter months here in the Midwest. (Getting wet and freezing and thawing) secondly would this be covered by lifetime warranty?

This is is almost a perfect match, get some frog tape and tape off the area and do about 5 light coats, plenty of drying time between coats. It's worked perfect on my medium to fix a couple of chips

I had a band that glued itself to the dome of my small.  When I took the dome off to replace a gasket, it took a hunk of ceramic with it.  I received a new dome under warranty.  I explained how it happened and took pictures.  I eventually sold it, however.

I really like your table idea, by the way.  I may do that with my kamado joe jr as it is identical in dimension to the small.

Bummer for sure! You might have some luck getting your dealer to side with you - if you appeal to his common sense of fairness as the ceramic glaze should not have popped off like that in such a short time.

BTW - your new table is cool! Well done...

  • Thanks woodchuck for the link. I’m going to pick up a can on the way home tomorrow. I might still see if it’s covered under warranty.

Cooking dude, yea I built a cedar table for my first large. Had the propain burner in it. Looked so good new but over 4 years of food stains and weathering it started looking like an old fence. I was talking to my neighbor friend about a full blown outdoor kitchen I was designing and saving up for. I was talking about counter top choices and he mentioned stainless. That got me thingking about the several thousands of $$$ in material costs for a real outdoor kitchen. Stainless would solve all the problems of keeping it looking clean and fresh. So I went to Sams and picked up a few of their prep tables. Drew up the cutouts I needed and took it to work. I’m fortunate that we have a very well stocked tool room a lot of experience. I had it cut out using a water jet. It took him less then an hour to set it up and program it and make the cuts. The other 2 tables will go between my larges in their nests. It will look great, easy to clean easy to move around to do my yearly power wash.

Ill post new new pics when I’m all finished.

If it was me I would not try to cover up the problem with paint before making a warranty claim!

IMO, this damage should most certainly be covered under warranty. And the cost should be taken out of the paycheck of the moron who came up with the idea of putting those things on the nest!

If they won't cover it, I would contact Bruce Bohannon at BGE. Worst case, just spray it as mentioned and wait for the base to crack from normal use. As it surely will.

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

I’m dreading the day I have to remove my egg from its current nest since the rubber covers have all melted to my base as well.  I think I remember reading about others having this issue and that they stopped using the rubber covers with the nests.  In my opinion it’s a design flaw in their own proprietary product and should be covered under warranty.
  • @Cornholio if it comes down to that cut the excess rubber off the stands and use your propane torch to heat them up before removing then clean off the melted rubber off your egg.

I'm going to be facing the same problem later today. I just got a new cabinet and I need to take the XL BGE out of the Egg cart, knowing that some of the black plastic pads are melted and stuck to the Egg. I plan to cut away the backside of the pad with a razor knife and lift it off of the cart. At this point, I'm not sure whether or not I'll try to further remove the remainder of the plastic pads from Egg. I might try, as alaskanassasin suggests, and heat it up with a blowtorch before trying to remove it further. Had the pads been made of silicone, they probably wouldn't have glued themselves to the Egg
Beavercreek_Smoker, I like your table, it is well thought-out.

I’m definitely not going to try and muscle mine out of the nest when the time comes and was thinking that cutting the plastic off as mentioned above, then with the egg out of the nest get it fired up nice and hot for a bit and seeing if that would help along with a blast from a torch.  Luckily I have no plans to ditch my nest or have a need to take it out but things can change.

Im glad I saw this thread, probably prevented me from pulling a ham fist job on my egg down the road since I would have thought the glaze would win the tug of war.  Sorry for the OP’s egg base and hope it gets replaced under warranty.

just wondering if a high temp burn would loosen the melted plastic enough to open the bands before cool down.  if water gets into the ceramic it is an issue with freeze/thaw, my old small lost huge areas half the thickness of the ceramic

  • Good good news! I called my dealer about placing a claim for this glaze issue. He said he never heard of it happening before and suggested I call BGE myself and ask about it.

I got a real human named Bruce right away. I explained my problem and he said they have warranted claims like mine in the past. He just needs to see pics and some info emailed to him and they will send out a replacement to my dealer.

An FYI, he told me even if they didn’t put any glaze on the egg, it could get wet and go through freeze and thaw cycles without any problems. He said the glaze is purely cosmetic.

But there could be a concern down down the road that the chipped glaze could start chipping away more and become an eye sore.

The silicone caps that caused my chipping is not really needed. That was an after thought after they had people complaining about the slick steel fingers sliding around on the slick glaze. But he said with a little common sense I shouldn’t have a problem not using them. I’m in the process of removing a large from a table and will be putting it in a new nest.

  • I got my XL out of the stand (can't remember what it's called in Egg parlance) without a problem, it came right out, although it looked like it, the plastic had not adhered to the Egg, so there was no damage to the glaze on the Egg. Got it all in the cabinet only to discover that in trying to center it in the hole, I had moved it off the center of the Nest. Gotta remove all the innards and reposition it tomorrow.
