BGE Cleaning - Strange goo coming from egg

Hello all,

I have had my large BGE for many years and decided to clean it again.  I filled with fuel and ran the temp to 600 for several hours.  After about 30 minutes I noticed this black goo on the side... Then, I noticed that after I wiped it up it came right back.... leaking through the green on the outside of the egg.

1.  The inside is now looking much cleaner, almost white.
2.  Will the egg be safe to cook in?  Any thoughts as to whether the goo might be toxic?
I have never used cleaners or anything other than natural lump.
3.  Any ideas on how to get the black goo off the outside?  I am thinking of clean the outside and then do another clean at 600 and repeat the process until I do not get anymore black goo leaking through the egg?

Thanks,
Dean

The egg is porous. The heat is expelling moisture and grease through the spider cracks in the glaze. It’s normal and nothing to be alarmed about. Yours is a little excessive though. Simple Green will clean up the exterior.

Also, it looks like your band isn’t on straight. You might want to check it.

I’ve not seen any black goo seep out of my egg but I also don’t do full blown clean burns, I just occasionally bump my temp up after a cook and let it go for a bit then shut the egg down and it seems to burn off the grates or whatever I put in there.  I have seen others post about the black goo and it seems to be just fine and shouldn’t be a problem.  That does look messy though!

FYI... I just checked the egg, and the black goo just rinses right off.  :)  I fired up another load at 600.
  • Thanks Double Egger... and all the responses... about the band.... I do need to adjust it.  We just moved and thus the impetus to clean it.  I also need to replace the gasket.  Looks like the Rutland is the way to go?  any good links for adjusting the bands?
