Repair of a kamado shell gasket surface?
Alphonse
Posts: 80
I inherited this Grill Dome with a camp I bought. About 8" of the rear gasket surface has spalled.
The hinge was badly maladjusted and the previous owner had done a very messy repair with some sort of cement. I have removed the majority of his repair and whatever he used is tough as nails and was hard to chip off. I suspect it was a Rutland product of some sort and you can see some left in the center of the spall (to be removed before repair).
The grill shell and internals are all in good shape with no cracks.
Since it is not a crack, I am hoping to clean it up well and use some furnace grout or cement and repair it. BTW, I called Grill Dome and they recommended using J B Weld but that doesn't appeal to me for this repair.
Any experience out there with a repair like this?

Rutland Refactory cement is my recommendation. Only problem in LA may be finding it. Check Amazon - or I may be able to buy some in a tube similar to a tube of caulking. PM me if you want me to see if I can find some.

Different brand but this also would work.
