SS Chimney Cap Gasket

New gasket for never used, hand-me-down stainless steel chimney cap arrives from Smokeware today (so says USPS). I'm inclined, as others, to apply that gasket to the interior of the cap, not on the egg itself. Any tips? How far from the bottom edge of the cap should I apply it? Any help greatly appreciated.

You will be able to place the base of the chimney cap on the dome and mark a circle with marker or pencil looking down from the top.Thank you,DarianGalveston Texas
