Has Anyone Tried "Sugar Steak"--Shown on Cooks Country TV?

They sprinkled 1" strip steaks with a sugar-salt combination, let them rest, and grilled them. Looked like they had a nice char.

Not a big sweet fan with steak. At the same time sugar makes a great crust. I would rather use heat to get a crust.

I like the show, but these are the folks that call the bge an overpriced novelty. They also recommend briquettes over lump, saying there's no difference in heat value, taste, etc. They're pretty good with baking and comfort food recipes, but their bbq, Mexican, cajun, and basically any style outside of the New England area is pretty lame.
