FLAME BOSS 300. Is it still the best option?

hello everyone
I’m gonna order a temp controller for my LBGE
is the fb 300 still the most popular?  I read something here about another one last week but can’t remember the name of it to do a search.it was a new brand I think. As always I appreciate any comments

After 8yrs with a fan forced controller I switched to the Smobot and have no regrets....their customer servive/tech support is first class.  Let us know if you have questions.
The problem with a problem is that you don't know it's a problem until it's a problem, and that is a big problem.

  • +1 on the Smobot. Couldn't be happier with it.

  • Thanks for the input, it’s much appreciated. I just tried to order a smotbot but they are out of stock till maybe February ;(

FB300 is time tested, and has great customer service should you need it.  Good US made product

Never used a smobot, but don't you have to take apart the DFMT to install it? I cook with the DFMT 99% of the time so it's nice to just slap the fan in place and go.

in any case controllers can be nice.  I like my flameboss, easy to use, great customer service.  only problem I've had with it has been glitchy temp probes and the company is great about replacing them under warranty.

  • Can’t go wrong with either but I will take the FB300 all day long.
  • Chuckytheegghead.  Why do you like the fb 300 better?

You do remove the top of the cap and screw the damper on in its place - takes all of 15 seconds.

You can leave the Smobot damper on and just move the damper manually. You don't really have to take it off or plug it in and use it in auto mode.

One advantage of using the Smobot damper manually in lieu of the original sliding top is that the Smobot damper won't change positions when you open the dome.

I control mine with the lower vent. Period. I have a DigiQ, but haven't used it since I started turbo cooking. The egg will easily maintain 300* and up without assistance and 300-320* is a fine temp for lo n slo. I never leave the house (or sleep) when the grill is going and it's easy to check on during the day without a crutch. I used to sleep thru the night when I used the DigiQ, though it made me nervous. Now I don't. I start at 9 or 10 AM and it's done by dinner time. No crutch, no unattended fire. No difference in the end product.

I bought the DigiQ before there was a FlameBoss (I think) and certainly before there was a Smobot. If I were buying one today, well, I wouldn't.

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

I'm going to agree with CQ above. Last year I got a cyberq wifi as a gift, and it really hasn't added much in temperature control. I've been able to hold steady temps in all kinds of weather for 5-6 hours easy just by working the vents and damper.
I have had trouble with the pit temp controller for the last few cooks, even with a new probe. It would be nice to monitor temps remotely but for now I'll control my temps with the vents.
