So I can't open my Thermapen to change the battery. Coin won't work. Screwdriver f'd it up even worse.

Tried an old half dollar coin?
Whatever you do, be gentle. The plastic, as you've seen, is soft.Living the good life smoking and joking -

Small screw driver out near the edge and tap with a hammer. Gently. You'll have more leverage out there. It'll leave a scar.

I discovered the same thing you have when I needed to change batteries,
I found a half dollar coin to open mine - after I chewed the plastic up a bit..Living the good life smoking and joking -

I've used a quarter with a small channel lock, downward pressure necessary.

I do have a friend that went through 3 thermopens before realizing he could change the batteries .....speaks volumes of the battery life , and the simplicity of some people . I, we, have served about 2000 people in the last 6 weeks., #1 tool = ThermopenVisalia, Ca @lkapigian

I had the same issue...part of the problem was I was trying to unscrew it. You only have to turn a short distance. I found a bottle opener fit perfectly.
...once turned to the open position I used a sharp pocket knife to pry it out.Which came first the chicken or the egg? I egged the chicken and then I ate his leg. -

This has me thinking.
Thoughts of a die-electric grease on the threads when it's received..maybe?

At least he can spot typos! Can’t change a battery though! LOL! Ask your wife, she’ll get it.
-
Dip that end in boiling water, then try removing. If that doesn't work, do it again but cool the cover with a piece of ice. Make sure your coin fills up the slot so you have good even torque.______________________________________________I love lamp..

I'm sure he'll whine to TW about his Fock up, demanding a new one.

If you're going to get a new battery cover since this one is messed up now, deepen the groove with a Dremel tool or something like that. Should be able to open with a quarter or screw driver after that.
Then get a new battery cover, of course.#1 LBGE December 2012 • #2 SBGE February 2013 • #3 Mini May 2013A happy BGE family in Houston, TX. -

I had the same problem with mine last night. I managed to get a pen knife in along the edge of the lid. It popped right open and didn't break any of the connectors.
-
Were you able to turn it at all with the quarter? I can’t tell if it’s already unlocked or not and the cover just needs to be pried up."I've made a note never to piss you two off." - Stike

I actually grabbed a quarter and had no issues with an open/close cycle on the thermopen. I will see how long the battery lasts. It does appear to be “unlocked”.

Battery always dies right in the middle of an important cook.
