Outrageously Good Duck Recipe Question

I plan on cooking 2 5lb duck using the above recipe from the Eggtoberfest Cookbook.  The recipe does not mention anything about piercing the skin as I have seen mentioned in many other recipes.  Is there something special about this recipe where that is not required or is it an oversight?
