Tube smoker vs. tray

I started with the A-mazin Tube smoker... it was good for about an hour... depending on how much smoke you're looking for, it may be ok or you may be refilling it for a longer smoke.

I ended up ditching it and create the smoke in my MM and then pipe it over to my Large...

  • I have the AMNPS tray. I've gone for 4 hours on it and still had pellet left. Works like a charm.  :)

I have the tray - I do not have the tube, so a biased opinion. I like the tray. I’ve used it for smoking cheese and pork bellies. If I light both ends at the same time it lasts 4 hours or so (best I remember).

I have the tray.  I fill one of the rows with pellets and put a foil ball at the end so the pellets don't spread.  One row is perfect for cheese smoking - to my taste.

Golden opening here about SWMBO and tube smoking but I digress... ;)
Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood.  Life is too short for light/lite beer!  Seems I'm livin in a transitional period. CHEETO (aka Agent Orange) makes Nixon look like a saint.

The Amazen boasts 16 hrs. Just sayin'.
  • The reason I like the tray is that it appears to allow for good control over duration (by choosing how many rows to fill). It also fits on the fire grate of both my L and MM.

I have a tube and the tray. I used to use the tube on my old Weber gas grill as it was meant to sit right on the flavorizer bars.

I use the tray in other grills when cold smoking cheese.

Results-wise I don't know that one is better than the other.

Used the tray this weekend for my first try at bacon. Put it in the bottom of my large egg. Was still making steady smoke 12 hours later when I pulled the bacon. I like it.

I have the tray and burn pellets mixed with wood chips to smoke cheese.  Works great in my large egg.

Any road will take you there if you don't know where you're going.

  • I use the tray with sawdust. Works well for me, both with cheese and bacon. No complaints at all, but I've never tried either pellets or the tube so limited familiarity.

I do sometimes mix a few chips in with the sawdust and that has always worked well too.

Thanks for all the input. Anyone have opinions on dust over pellets. I know pellets are a lot more accessible.
