    Definitely should take something and agitate the lump before each cook.  This will allow the soot to collect at the bottom for you to clean out.  Without doing this you will smother your coals and prevent air flow.

    Years ago, I actually read an experienced Egger recommending taking all of the lump out and carefully putting it back in, taking care to put larger pieces at the bottom for lots of air flow.  Seems extreme and unnecessary to me, but I do usually rake the lump a bit with the ash tool before a second burn, and I did get one of those "wiggle rods" several years ago that @Photo Egg recommended above, and sometimes I use it, again just to be sure there isn't a bunch of small pieces clogging the air holes.
