HI All,
Sorry for the basic question and hope to bring value with receipts etc down the road. I have problem, I have never been into grilling/BBQing etc but recently "had" to buy a grill for the patio of our new home to appease my wife. So I researched Treager and the rest of them and decided to go with BGE. I am officially hooked on the thing now after 2 months!
Very stoked about the BGE following and especially this forum.
My question is, is there a place to purchase BGE lump and wood chunks at a discount or is always retail price. Anywhere you all recommend besides ACE?
Thank you!

Home Depot sells Royal Oak which is used by many folks. Academy sells B&B. Rockwood is a premium lump, but since you mentioned ACE I assume you know about that. Let people know where you are located - that might be relevant. Others will come along and chime in.Coleman, Texas
Large BGE & Mini Max for the wok. A few old camp Dutch ovens and a wood fired oven. LSG 24” cabinet offset smoker. There are a few paella pans and a Patagonia cross in the barn. A curing chamber for bacterial transformation of meats...
"Bourbon slushies. Sure you can cook on the BGE without them, but why would you?"

Welcome! BGE lump is made by Royal Oak. RO is readily available at Home Depot and Walmart. At a fraction of the price of BGE lump. If you live near Holyoke Mass, you can buy Wicked Good lump direct for about the same as RO. Better lump, but at retail, pretty expensive.
You will be bombarded by the Rockwood fanboys. I've never used it. If you are looking for discounted BGE, forget RW,I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

BGE lump is made by Royal Oak. Royal oak is cheaper than BGE lump. Home Depot has sales usually in spring where they mark down Royal Oak about 33%. I stock up then. As far as wood chunks or chips, I’ve never seen them on sale. I’m sure you could find them on sale. I get a lot of wood chunks from my Dad. He lives in a rural area and uses wood to heat his house. I’m sure you have friends or even neighbors that would gladly part with a small amount of their fire wood for you to cut up and use for smoking. Just make sure it is not pine or something that should not be used for smoking.Pittsburgh, PA. LBGE

As stated above, if you like BGE brand give Royal Oak a shot. Same stuff. Available at Walmart for cheap.
that being said, I’m one of the Rockwood fanboys. About the same cost as BGE brand, but way higher quality. If your Ace doesn’t carry it, they can most likely order it. I’d recommend buying a bag to try. If you don’t see the difference, what did it hurt?

I use Royal Oak and have had 0 issues. I need to try RockWood but just haven’t purchased a bag yet.

I'm with @johnnyp here. The one thing you will find with Rockwood is that it is very smoke neutral. That enables you to better manage the smoke profile you add (or not) to the protein you are cooking.
It all burns but if you have the opportunity to try a few different brands, go for it and then decide.
Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. # 38 for the win. Life is too short for light/lite beer! Seems I'm livin in a transitional period. -
Welcome aboard! Here is a handy site to bookmark which rates most ALL brands of lump sold in the US. Once you start looking around stores near you might run into some brand. And BTW N@ked Whiz is not a porn site - its legit!

You will get different opinions on Royal Oak. That is because they have many different kilns and operations that bag for them. Your luck will depend on the RO supplier for your area. My recommendation is try a few different things you can get local. See what you like.
Btw, I am a RW fanboy, but I still use RO for hot and fast and for pork. I like the smokier flavor on pork and don't notice any difference on hot and fast.
One thing everyone will agree on is, DO NOT BUY Cowboy lump.Don't tell your problems to people. 80% of people don't care and 20% are glad you have them.

Thank you all very much! Great info!

At my local Ace Hardware, Rockwood is actually a little cheaper than BGE lump!
I used nothing but BGE charcoal for many years, and loved it! But I finally tried Rockwood, and I sort of hate to admit it, but I like it better. It takes less long to burn off the white "bad smoke," sometimes I really don't get any of it.
I agree with the other posters: if you want to stick with the same thing, Royal Oak is the same thing, same manufacturer, just a different brand name, and it's cheaper. But you might want to try a bag of Rockwood if you have any locally. -

My recommendation is pick the lump you like the most and stick to that lump exclusively. That makes it easier for you.
There are folks here that will buy anything on sale and go with it. I've been a Wicked Good user since the beginning and I know how it's going to work with whatever I cook.
Welcome to the CULT!
