Bolt busted

So this just happened.  Are the bolts under the bands somehow attached to the band or can I just get a new bolt, loosen the nut on the top band, slide the band up, insert new bolt through the hole and then retighten the band and put the nut on the new bolt?

Sorry for all of the dumb questions lately.  Thanks.

  • Your dealer should have new bolts. Have to remove the band to install.

They are called clinch bolts or self clinching studs and look like this...

Your dealer should have them. Pretty sure Fastenal does too. Fix as you described.

What happened?  Did you strip it out?  The clinch stud should be there.

Fastenal has them.  I got longer replacements recently for a Weber Q light mod on my handle.  The dome will have to come off to slide the clinch studs through the back of the band.

I was checking everything and retightening and it felt loose so I tried to tighten it and broke the bolt.  Must have stripped it previously.

Is the crazing on the side of the dome normal?

Don't know.  It has been that way for a few years.  The base is new so perhaps it is making the dome crazing look worse.

    Yes
  • Long time ago I bought replacements at my local Fastenal. Had to be ordered but took only a few days to get them in.

You don't happen to know the correct size that will fit the BGE bolts?  Thank you.

Sorry, but I don't know. Hopefully someone else will chime in. Or buy from your dealer. Or if you still have the nut, bring it with you. If you don't, then remove the nut next to it and bring it along.

I checked my manual - it appears they are 1/4" by either 1/2" or 5/8".  I think the 1/2" are for the handle and the 5/8" are what I need for attaching the spring assembly to the upper band.  I forgot I had my manual and just found it.  I did stop at my dealer and they don't have any.  Thank you!  Much appreciated!

I may have some spare bolts, is the nut salvageable?

I wouldn't be so sure about the dealer. I went to the metro Atlanta "go to" hardware store for egg products (platinum dealer none the less) and they dont carry the carriage bolts for the band so I wouldn't expect them to carry these either.

That is very generous of you!  Thank you.

I checked my local hardware places and neither of them had even heard of clinch bolts or self clinching studs.  The dealer may still be able to get me one as the owner is gone until Monday and his wife wasn't sure if they had any or not.  Can always go the Fastenal route too.  Thanks everyone.

Just get a band hardware kit and you will have extra parts for a while.  My dealer sells them for like $7.   No big deal

Great idea but my dealer is a pretty small outfit and they didn't have any when I stopped this morning.  Like the suggestion though and I will stop tomorrow to see about them ordering me one on the next truck.  Always good to have backups!
