Gap between lid and base

Howdy,
New XL owner (purchased assembled from an Ace Hardware on 8/15/17). I've been a lurker here for a while. I grilled for the 4th time last night and noticed smoke coming from the back between the lid and the base. I've attached a few pics for reference. I noticed some smoke the 1st few times as well (kept temp at 350), but I thought it was the gaskets properly sealing based on what I'd read. I'm guessing this is not normal. Any suggestions? (not sure why pics are rotating?!?)

Thanks for the input. I called the Corp office and was told it was a simple fix. He told me to raise the lid and remove the springs 1st. Close the lid and loosen the main bolt on the top band and slide the band up closer to the lip on the lid and re-tighten the bolt. Open the lid and re-attach the springs and I should be good to go. We'll see...

I had the same problem after about two months of use on my xl and did the same process on mine and it worked.

This was just recently discussed at the bottom of page 5 here:

@pgprescott can weigh in on this. I think he is a dealer and deals with this issue a lot.

Sliding the top band up closer to the lip will help to close the gap so that it is not visible, but it will still not pass the dollar bill test in the back and you will still see smoke escape there during cooks. What it does do however, is create another issue in the form of an underbite.

Until BGE comes out with a better design like their competitors are excelling at, I just line the bands (and the dome/base) up like they're supposed to be and leave the springs off. Yeah, it's a little heavy at first, but you get used to it and everything is lined up nice and tight.

The fix described above is the only way I have been able to make some of them
seal 100%. Removing one of the springs is a less than desirable fix, but also really helps. I have pushed the top band up in the back area and the lower band down a tad to get it done. It's funny because it's not most of them, just the occasional XL.  Good luck.
  • I've had the issue on my old xl egg which was brand new, about a month of use. They sent their local rep out who couldn't fix the gap after an hour of adjusting. They ended up replacing my whole egg and had their regional guy come back out to set it up. He was able to eliminate the gap on the new one, but it had a severe under bite. Long story short after a few months of cooking on the new replacement xl the gap is back, it's probably between 1/8 - 1/4 inch at the back. I think they have a bad design. Very dissatisfied considering what I spent on the egg and table. I will be removing the springs, that's the only way I can get rid of the gap.
