BGE flaking

Hi all,

I've inherited a BGE from my father-in-law. He hasn't used it in about 10 years and after inspecting it I noticed that the dome is flaking inside and out. It's not just buildup of creosote, I think it's part of the dome too. Below are pictures, including 2 of what's flaked off.  Any thoughts on what I should do? Is it safe to use?

Was your FIL the original owner?  If so looks like a great warranty claim!!

If it's only the dome - buy a new dome. Your into the egg for practically nothing, good investment.
I've slow smoked and eaten so much pork, I'm legally recognized as being part swine - Chatsworth Ca.
  • Warranty. Same thing happened to the dome on my small.

I would definitely look into a warranty claim for the dome. As mentioned if he is the original owner you can likely file a warranty claim. You are supposed to have a receipt but usually you can find someone to work with you.

Any idea how old it is?  If you show us more pics of things like the handle, hinge, and the top daisy wheel we can probably tell you because we are nerdy like that.

I would definitely inspect the bands and bolts for rust. Those likely are out of warranty so you may want to buy a new hinge/band assembly if they look rusty.

Which came first the chicken or the egg?  I egged the chicken and then I ate his leg.
