SRF...expired or not?

In Feb'16 I bought a Gold sampler from SRF and two of their tomahawk ribeye steaks. I still have the ribeye' and two sirloin filets. Wife asked me if the were expired and I can't readily determine a use by date. The vac seals seem fine with no apparent burn.

What do y'all think, are these still good?

  • They definitely aren't going to hurt you if that's what you are asking. They might not taste as good as fresh.

If always resided in a freezer with no long duration power-loss you are home free.   There is a reason for the no expiration date.  Cryovac is your friend.  Thaw and enjoy.
BTW- you may want to review your freezer cycle program if you have had SRF hiding for around 18 months.  ;)

Assuming they have been frozen all this time and you see no sign of freezer burn then yes they are still good. Even if freezer burnt you may want to try a light trimming to get under that damage and look at the texture at that level. Frozen meat doesn't "go bad" like in the sense of rotting. Seafood OTOH to me anyway - suffers freezer burn quicker and worst than red meat.

I'll just throw this out. If you send one to me, I will prepare it and eat it. If I'm ok the next day I will let you know. I always like to be helpful!

    Enjoy the steak!

My understanding is that food is safe in the freezer indefinitely. It can suffer from freezer burn, but no safety issues. If vac sealed there is no problem with freezer burn. So...you can basically keep vac sealed meat in the freezer as long as you want.  Enjoy it!

Which came first the chicken or the egg?  I egged the chicken and then I ate his leg.
