Just a friendly reminder that today is national hot dog day.  I've had a package of SRF dogs in the freezer for sometime now and guess today will be the day that I finally cool them.  Feel free to post your hot dogs here if you cook some today/tonight.

I just saw this on Facebook. Half the responses were Ketchup.

I thought "awww $hit that's how we're starting hot dog day? With a fight?"

I'm a Patriot. As long as I draw breath it will be Ketchup.

    But mustard all the way.

That's interesting!  I thought pretty much everybody put ketchup on their hot dogs when they were kids, but pretty much everybody switches to mustard, later.  I sometimes put ketchup or BBQ sauce on a hot sausage, but never on a hot dog.  For me, starting easiest:
    • Mustard,
    • mustard and sauerkraut,
    • mustard, sauerkraut and cooked onions in the style of Philadelphia hot dog carts,
    • mustard, Flint-style Coney Island Chili, chopped raw sweet onions, salt and pepper

What are your favorite commercially available hot dogs?

    I have two that I like;

    • Sabrett's and
    • Boar's Head Natural Casing (I think they used to call them Manhattan style)

I like a thin natural casing dog that snaps when you bite it.
Served with sauteed chopped onions, spicy brown mustard and maybe a splash of hot sauce.  Solid.
If I'm missing any good ones, let me know!

2nd... and I'm probably going to get flogged for this non-traditionalist question, but has anyone found any nitrite free dogs that you like?

I do put a little bit of ketchup on my dogs.  I also add mustard and some fresh diced onions.  This is my goto mustard

I like the big beef hot dogs Costco has. I make slot dogs with those and are YUM.

@fishlessman I read your list of dogs above twice.  The second time through I imagined you as Forest Gump and it was much better.

Ketchup is for french fries. NEVER dogs!

Had no idea there was a "Day" for this. Just had a Pearl a few days ago. That's my limit for a while. =)

Here are a couple from a few years ago, topped with Guldens, onion, leftover pork butt instead of chili and La Bomba (hot antipasto). Delicious!! The red stuff is from the hot peppers in the Bomba, it is NOT ketchup! =)

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

I hardly ever actually order them, but my very favorites are Koegel Viennas from Flint, Michigan.  Next after that are the similar Boar's Head viennas (natural casing), and, though they're completely different, Hebrew National.

When in a pinch I will either get Nathan's or Hebrew.  One of the local butchers makes their own and I tried to keep those on hand.

I love hot dogs, but only if grilled (and a bit browned/charred). Boiled are gross, lol. I'm also the heathen that likes (gasp!) ketchup, mustard, mayo, relish, and carmelized onions.
