Travelling with Small Ceramic Cooker....any protection inside?

Mayberry
Posts: 751
Just bought a KJ Jr to go along with my Large BGE. Bought it, to not only use at home, but to take with us when we go camping, to the beach, to a friend's pool, etc. We are going to a friend's house for the 4th today and I'm cooking some apps on it while we are there. For those with small, MM, mini's, etc.....do you use anything inside the grill to keep the ceramic from breaking in transport, or will normal road chatter be okay? Bed of truck, back of minivan, etc. Should I use something inside to protect the components from rattling together?

I take my MM with us when we travel. I put some cardboard pieces between the egg and the insides to cushion it. I wrap the daisy wheel in paper towels. I have had 0 issues. I just make sure it's a tight spot so it doesn't move.

I slide a few wood shims down the sides of the firebox for good measure. Place the woo, firebricks on the bars, and grate. No issues.BrandonQuad Cities

I don't know about a KJ, but when I travel with my mini, I strap in in the backseat with a seatbelt through the handle. Either that or in the trunk sitting in a big heavy wood stand I had made that doesn't slide around. You should be good to go as long as it is strapped down in some way.Happily egging on my original large BGE since 1996... now the owner of 5 eggs. Call me crazy, everyone else does!

I make sure the lid on mine is locked. That's it.

I have been traveling with my Eggs for 10 years and have never done anything but set them in the car and strapped them in so they cant fall over, don't even take the old lump out sometimes. Mini, Mini Max, Small, Medium and Large size Eggs. Have even put them in the back corner of a pickup truck and in the back of my Jeep Liberty pulled behind the Motor Home. My small has 20,000 miles in a hatch in the Motor Home with no problems. Hope this helps and Happy traveling with your ceramics.

Made it safely. I will pack with a few pieces of cardboard or wood shims next time. I put an old towel inside today around the inside parts. Worked, but dirty. After I cooked, I shut down, waited Annie 15 minutes and removed the coal to cool faster. After removing the hot coals, out was cool enough to carry with no problems in another 15-20 minutes. This thing is a workhorse. I love having a 2nd ceramic cooker, love having one that's portable and really love the versatility this gives me. Thanks for all the suggestions.Athens, GA
