fired up my XL for the first time today, they told me it gets hot, I didnt realize they meant HOT like HELL......initially had trouble getting the charcoal to light evenly, I split a charcoal igniter in two and put it on opposite ends and the inferno took flight.....this thing is unbelievable.....i need to spend some time building the right size charcoal stack and learning how this things heats up to get a even burn from the start....i was able to manipulate the vents to maintain a steady temp after a few hours of trial and error.....when it's lit, it's lit :-)

The thing is, it's not briquettes. You don't ash over. Light the fire, let it get going, set the vents and let it stabilize. If you're going for ashes over, you'll have an inferno.

The "right size charcoal stack" is basically "fill er up!"  You control the fire by controlling the airflow.  Every time I put in more lump, I fill it to the top of the fire ring, occasionally a little higher.  Yeah, if you lit that and waited for it all to be burning to ash over, it'd be 1000° or more.  You light it and watch the temperature carefully and try NEVER to let it get much hotter than your target temp because it takes forever for them to cool down.

Fill it to the top of the fire ring, then control the temperature by controlling air flow.

The only other thing is that you usually just light a single spot for a low-and slow, but several spots for a hot-and-fast where you want heat all across the grid.

Welcome aboard and enjoy there journey.  Above all, have fun.
As above, if you want to run low and slow get no more than a softball sized quantity of lump going in one spot with the dome and bottom vent open.  Then install any hardware, shut the dome, place the DFMT,  close the bottom vent to around an inch open and wait til you get around 50*F south of your cook temp.  Close the bottom vent by half-petals only on the DFMT and ease it in to the sweet-spot.  FWIW-
