For cedar I personally prefer a natural finish, especially on red cedar. I also prefer a matte or oil rubbed finish. Something about a high gloss sheen on cedar distracts from the beauty of the wood, IMHO.

"Stain" is for color, "Finish" is for protection. Natural color is pretty nice with cedar, but I suppose you could add some if you want.

If it is going to be covered under a porch or cover, look for a 'spar varnish' or epoxy finish with UV inhibitors. Follow the directions, and plan on updating it every so often.

If it is going to be out in the open or uncovered, don't bother. There isn't any finish in the world that will last long. Save up for a cover or a porch...

Sikkens Cetol SRD  is a nice finish for the horizontal pieces of cedar. It will be hard for any finish to last on the top. I used a 2 part epoxy and 7 coats of Helmsman Spar Urethane for the top and it looked good for about 18 months

Figure out how many coats of poly you want.... then double it.

Still in the process of completing a table for my mom. This was built at home with the knowledge of breaking it down to transport in the car. Once there, mom (81 years old) did much of the staining before putting it back together. I do like the color. It was Olympic semi-transparent in the Mocha color. Got it from Lowes. The wood is cedar.
