I have a XL EGG and a small gas grill.  I am thinking about a Webber Kettle or a smaller egg.  which would you recommend and if egg which one.  I normally cook steaks, chicken pieces, brisket, pork butts, ribs, salmon, and veggies. Normally there are just the two of us but at least once per week we have about 6-7 people. when I cook brisket or two butts or lots of chicken I also want something other than the small gasser to cook veggies or other things such as wings or ABTS.

Get a small. Do you have a golden? We are hoping to have our first one in august.

The first question I will ask you is do you plan on transporting the new grill or will it stay within the confines of your property?

Yes we have two and show one. Wife also trains both for agility and obedience.  The order of importance here is dogs, wife, then sometimes me.  I do not plan to take it places, just here and I do not table the egg. I take the small gas grill with us camping.

Then I would agree with Jeremiah and get the small egg.  I use mine more than my large now.

Another vote for the SBGE - I outfitted mine with a high-que grate and woo and stone from ceramic grill store.  A true hacker across the cooking spectrum.
Edit:  you can't go wrong with any Weber grill depending on your location in the winter months if you don't plan the second one to be a low&slow cooker.

Like the suggestions above. The Small BGE and a CGS Woo, along with your XL would make a great team.

I own both the small and the medium. While the small is cool, the medium is way more capable and uses an almost imperceptible larger amount of fuel. It is my egg used most when its just me or my family if five that I am cooking for. The XL is for big cooks only now. I've decided eggs aren't worth traveling with, buy based on capability.

Family of 5 and no space issues on the medium? I was considering a large, but your post has me thinking I should give the medium a second look?

I use the Weber Jumbo Joe weekly for tailgating. If it doesn't need to be potable I'd look into a Small BGE. If for veggies, burgers, dogs, etc. you might want to look into a Blackstone griddle

Another vote for a medium. You can cook plenty on one for a family . I have cooked nine pounds of pork loin in two pieces on it and a 14 lb spatchcocked turkey. I don't do ribs but I understand that you might have to cut a slab in half. it is a charcoal miser.

Get the medium. You need real estate to grill veggies

I am another vote for the medium.  I have a XL and would like another smaller egg myself, but I just haven't had the time this year to cook like I used to with all my kids activities.  My dealer was saying if I get a another egg it should be the large but I am thinking medium if I got another one.  There is just 3 of us most of the time.

I would recommed a One Touch Gold kettle.
Big real estate, two-zone gilling, snake method smoking, portable if needed, pound for pound, it cannot be beat.

An XL OTG combo would handle just about anything for your crowd.

My small is a nice grill, I love it, but it's small(capacity).

A Weber Jumbo Joe or WSM in any size, are other fine options.  The WSMs are raised direct, direct, grilling machines, not a one trick smoke pony if used correctly, portable as well.

The small egg gets less and less ride time.   Literally grab and grill Weber options are much better in several ways.

If choosing another egg, and portability isn't necessary, I would opt for a bigger medium, or even a large.

It's good to have options.  =)

I hate to be that guy, but look into a KJ jr as well. Super portable, and a decent amount of cooking space.  Next time a KJ roadshow is near me I'm buying one.

I have a large and a small. The small is a great cooker. But I wish I had an XL and a medium.

I'd go with a Weber Kettle. Look around on Craigslist first - might find a great deal.

I'd suggest a Weber Kettle or medium BGE.

Brandon, that is a really nice family picture.  I am afraid to post something like that, my wife would eventually find out how many I actually have.  Here is a pic of my ranch and two 26.75" OTGs I had for a cook last week at work (my 26's are not in pic, those are 26's we keep at work). That ranch was hot, therm read 750 or so for the sear of all of these tri tips.

Somehow the medium is really overlooked.  It has the same size exhaust and intake as the large, yet an interior volume closer to the small.  Its a fire breathing monster if you want it to be.  The 15" cooking grid is enough for me to grill for my family of 5, no problem.
  • The medium is a great size.
Agree. I owned a Med but sold it to finance a Large before also adding a Mini Max. The Med is by far the best performer, IMO, and I often miss it. The downside of the Med, aside from the reduced real estate, is incompatibility with a lot of bakeware (Dutch ovens, pans, etc.).

    Still a fantastic cooker!

Oh man, do I love these pics.  You don't mess around at work.
I came real close to pulling the trigger on a Rancher, and a 26.  Lust over the 26 every time strolling through the True Value.  Saw one wih Craycorts on CL some time ago....so close.

If you can't share a pic, do you mind sharing what you've got in the stable?

Wow that is an impressive cooker! I just realize I missed one when I scrolled over your picture. I have one of those green OTGs also. It's part of the work arsenal. We keep them in the stairwell.
