Thanks - I have been a fan of TOH way back when Bob Vila was the host and I too watched New Yankee Workshop with Norm from the show's inception. I even met Norm and got his autograph back when ACE Hardware was a sponsor and Norm was here for a new ACE opening.

I'm a big fan of TOH and NYW. I go back to the Bob Villa days as well. I also met Norm and got one of his books signed at a home show. Norm had a nice shop and as time went by he had more tools donated like that big drum sander but he always explained his techniques in a way that made anyone think they could do one of his projects. Also a watcher since the Bob Vila days. Always look forward to the new project houses - currently they're in Detroit.

"Ask This Old House" has become rather repetitive. Tho I really look forward to the "What Is It" segments they do a few times a season.

How many more seasons do you think Silva and Trethewey have in them? :)

Thank you for your reply! Personally I enjoy working with my hands and tools and appreciate the talent these guys bring to and share with their followers. To me it's a shame how many high school graduates whether first or second generation who have no clue how to repair anything they ought to be able to IMO. On the other hand some rich folk don't want to be bothered and let talented men and women do simple home improvements tasks while they play golf, grill or chase their neighbor's wives.

I like both TOH & NYW.  NYW was special in that it was one guy by himself building a project over the course of two days explaining the process clearly along the way.  I don't think a show like that would be given a chance on TV today.

I'm watching the TOH series in Detroit with great interest.  My Mom's family lived for a long time in Dearborn very close to the Detroit border.  I loved my Great Grandma's house.  It was old, had cool architectural elements and the craftsmanship was remarkable.

Cool shirt Ron!  Don't "borrow" Tom's Festool toys while on the job.

Norm knew his stuff but Bob had a bunch of behind the scene people that made him look good.

I was out walking in my neighborhood and stumbled on TOH shooting while they worked on a house 1/2 mile from me. My jaw dropped.

I stopped watching regularly when their budgets just got too big. There's little to no value for me to watch them install a 100k heating system on a million dollar house. None of the homeowners seemed to know which end of a hammer to hold either. Just how to write checks. Actually, I still enjoy Roger and Ask This Old House.

Tom and Norm are 2 of my heros.  Do it right and save a lot of problems down the road.  I can sit and watch Mike Holmes for hours also.

I understand and agree with your points. Just the same there is upgrade product knowledge to be gained. Not everything on the shelves at the big box stores are the best value. Buy cheap and replace sooner is not a great value in my book!

Also I know only 3 or 4 guys employed at our 3 big box stores who I know I can trust for advice.

I enjoy the Ask TOH segements during those million dollar renovations.

Correct me if my memory is fuzzy, but wasn't Bob Vila just a general contractor   who described what was being done? I don't recall seeing Bob down *sshole and elbows doing the work like Norm or now like Tommy.

Did something happen to Roger?  It seems he may have suffered a stroke in recent years.  I like that guy, but it seems like they are "propping him up" lately.
