Meat probe storage while not in use

I have 4 or 5 meat probes between my Thermoworks Smoke and my Flameboss.  I am looking for a better way to store them, right now I wind them up and put everything in a tupperware container.  Just wanted to get different and possibly better ideas from "the experts".

Your way sounds good. What issues are you having storing in a tupperware container that you are looking for alternatives?
    Thank you,

No issues really, just thought that maybe there was a better way then in a tupperware.

I use these little earbud cases to coil up the wires to keep them from getting tangled:

I handle them as little as possible.  I hang them up outside over my paper towel holder next to the cookers.  They don't see the elements.  I've always hung them, rather than coiling them.  I feel that coiling up and uncoiling risks kinking / damage.

I've never had a probe malfunction on me either, other than the one meat probe that spent an hour in hot coals by accident.

I'm just a coiler and bread twisty guy for my inexpensive ones, but a real caretaker for my BBQ Guru cables which stay with the brains in a hard shell pistol case.
  • Typically I have too much to drink, forget about them, wait til it's been raining for a few hours, swear at the ground while I go get them from outside, throw them on my fridge in the garage...

Then spend 20 minutes before the next cook trying to figure out where they are and why they aren't clean.

    I would suggest another route.

I coil and use velcro straps like for small extension  cords.  I put them in a cheap Glad food container.  They are stored with my DigiQ2  and all that stuff outside in a cheap Home Depot orange toolbox.

I like this idea. I think my probes will need a little bigger case then the link.

I bought my flameboss in November and had a probe go bad (they replaced after one email), and it got me thinking about my storage and if that somehow caused it. I think I am going to see if I can find a cheap bigger headphone case to store them in. Thanks for all of your ideas. Keep em coming.

I bought this off of amazon to give it try.

The probe itself is not inside the earbud case. Only the probe wires are coiled and zipped inside. You can see on the right half of the box that the hard probe itself is poking outside of the orange case.

My Fireboard has 8 probes and I'm sure they all would fit completely inside the case you linked to but I was more concerned about all the wires getting tangled and wanted to avoid having to use twist ties or cable wraps or the like.

Thanks. I searched and didn't see anything. I asked a couple of guys locally and they didn't really have any other ideas.

Howdy, stranger!!! I was in such a hurry today to get to a couple doctor appointments and then rush home to get my yard mowed before that threat of yet another horrible rain storm/gully washer behind our home. Sorry that your moniker didn't register with me! BTW the Peoria Eggfest - after 14 continuous years - is now history. maybe some time somewhere we might meet again and enjoy some egged food!

  • I thought I would update this post since I have found something that I really like for my flameboss.

    IT IS PERFECT!!!

It is almost as if it is designed for this use.  I circle the probes on the mesh side and the base fits on the other side perfectly.  I will post pictures when I get home.

I can't seem to find an old picture, but years ago I took a piece of corrugated cardboard from a thick box and cut a rectangular piece out of it. The probes were protected by slipping each down a slot and then I wrapped the wires around the exterior and cut an edge to keep the end from flopping loose. It was a cheap solution, but protected the probes and wires and simply stood on edge in the closet. In later years I merely coiled them, secured with a bread twisty and kept them in a baske. BTW one suggestion though... I had accumulated probes from several brands of thermometers as gifts and I always - and to this very day - put a tape protected label on each probe so I knew which goes with which unit. Not all probes are interchangeable even though they fit!

Crown bags work well. Or a Zip Lock bag
