Cedar Table For XL BGE - Question On Egg Support Dimensions (w/ Table Nest)

Hi All,

After many years of waiting, I'm finally getting my first BGE & joining the ranks of you fellow EggHeads. Obviously want the best for my egg, so it's home will be a cedar table. I went with an XL Egg / Table Nest but unfortunately it hasn't been delivered yet so I've been basing my dimensions off of research I've found on this forum (huge help!) & the rest of the internet.

So far the build is going well & surprisingly on schedule. I'm going to do the cuts for the support pieces for the egg tonight & want to (re) confirm that I'm using the right dimensions before I tie everything in. The XL Egg will be sitting on a Table Nest. So based on the official BGE site's table plans, my (infamous) A dimension should be 14.5" (12.5" + 2" for the table nest) which means I'll be cutting out a 26.25" table top opening for the XL egg, correct? At that A dimension, how much of a gap will that leave between the Egg & table top / how high will the top of the egg sit from the finished table? Based on the pictures I've seen, that gap will be pretty snug but about a 1/4 inch right?

So my finished table top will be 1" & the table nest will be sitting on a 1" piece of stone which will sit directly on support studs. So the top of my support stud should be 14.5' down from top of the table frame (w/o the table top), eg. 11.5" + 2" table nest + 1" stone =  14.5".

Ideally I'd prefer to make the cut after I have the egg in possession, but I'm trying to get the table ready so the delivery guys can drop it right in & saves me from doing it myself. Please correct me if I'm missing something...

The 26.25 hole for the xlg will be what I'm cutting....or now what I ordered in the granite.

My shelf is 11" from the top table frame.

Remember to account for the back hindge movement.

At 14.5" your hinge will rub. I measured that my lid has 5.5" of travel with the lid full open.

Ah, I've been reading about the hinge rub issue... Is the 5.5" of travel for an XL Egg? Also read something about a recent design change with the hinges that resolved that, but I guess it still moves alot eh?

Given your shelf is 11" from the top table frame, do you have a bigger gap between the table top / Egg with a 26.25" hole?
  • I can't wait to see the results!

My granite will be delivered and installed Friday so I will let you know on the gap size. From my best guesses, it looks like I will have no more than 1/4 inch gap around the egg. I have the new hinge on my XL and I'm getting 5.5" of travel.

Just saw that, looks fantastic. I'll post pics of my table build once complete, hopefully later this week...

So now that your table is complete, your height from the shelf support stub to finished table top would be 12" right? Sorry for so many questions on the height, it's just driving me nuts that I can't measure it out for myself since my egg hasn't arrived yet...
  • I made a cedar table with a granite top using the big green egg table plans and when my egg was installed discovered that the plans had an error.  it calls for a dimension fo 17 inches from the top of the granite to the bottom of the shelf..  don't do this it should be 15" as you won't be able to open the lid.  What I did was to ask the granite provider to save the cut out 21" for the large egg and used this under the egg.  Wound up having to add another piece of granite along with feed in order to get it high enough to open the lid.
  • I just saw the table build in person and it's coming along great . I'm really glad James is doing this so he can help me with my large / small double table build lol . Congrats on pulling the trigger bud ! Enjoy it

Thanks gijoejd, that's just what I was looking for & confirms what I was thinking. Have my egg scheduled for delivery this Friday, so I'll be finishing up the build this week & will post the finished pics
