I finally installed my Rutland today thanks to @rrp from forever ago. I always had "plans" to put time aside to do it then life kept happening. Anywho while squeezing it on slowly not to put too much I felt a sudden release and the backend had a blowout. Anyone else have this occur?

That is the first time I have ever heard of that. I suspect what happened was you actually had an old tube which had already cured somewhat at the normal end and when you applied pressure - which you really should NOT have to do - that forced the scrimped end to blow. Did you get any of the blow out on your egg?

backend blowout...Great reply written and deleted.  You'll have to trust me.

Anyway, no, never had that happen, but I've only put on 3 gaskets.  I'd guess a faulty tube.  Hope it didn't make too big a mess - that permex is a bich to clean up.

  • @rrp no, none landed on my egg and I just used the backend blowout to finish the job. Still worked pretty well and I'll post pics after the cure period. Would rather let it sit with lid pressure for the full 24 hours. My hands on the other hand needed a good wash with gasoline once done.

Yes, three weeks ago when I put my new one on.  It was a brand new package from the store and when I punctured the nozzle it was solid.  I keep some copper wire on hand to help get the hard stuff out but a chunk must have got pushed in because as I was squeezing it out to put the gasket on the bottom blew out just like yours.

Good! just for the record for others reading this - the best way to deal with any Permatex that may have run down the sides - especially inside - is to not try to wipe it up as that will just smear it and drive it into the ceramic pores. Instead let it cure 24 hours and it can be trimmed off with a sharp blade.
  • Pretty good install minus the blowout. Thanks again Ron for the detailed instructions and gasket.

Eggcellent job! If that tassel at the back side butt ends bothers you just take a pair if sharp scissors and trim it down.
  • They dont bother me at all. I'm sure after a few cooks they will settle in.
