Wow, just read whole thread.  I already responded once.  At least I'm consistent.

I have a KAB in my medium and MM.  My XL has good airflow and tons of space for ash.  I just stir it and rarely clean ash out and never saw the need for a KAB.  My other two get regular cleaning.
I just sent ye ol' dad an email. He still kicking??? Hopefully he isn't still wandering around the desert out there in search of the freezer of Illinois beef you swiped from him in his move to AZ!
And yup @Jeepster47 is still kicking.  He doesn't want to bring grills in his fancy new driveway or patio, for fear of staining them.
In all seriousness...I just discovered a product which according to even third party sources will remove oil, grease etc off concrete, asphalt etc by using environmentally friendly "things" which gobble up the spills. I'll tell you more if you are interested.

Please share with the group or send me a PM as well.  My paver patio is not looking so great under the Eggs.

Well guys, here is the link. I first heard about all the success with this product  on Glenn Haege's Master Handyman radio show. I bought a pound of it for asphalt and it just arrived yesterday so I have not tried it yet.

Go buy some diatomaceous earth and TSP.  Mix it up with water into a paste.  Apply to stain.  Let it sit there until the stain is gone.

I've always used kitty litter, dry.  Cheep and it works fine.

I still use that to get the bulk of it.  My technique is to help remove the resulting stain after the litter.

I had a question and emailed them last night after hours. This morning a fellow called with my answers and reminded me again to spread this stuff on lightly and give it two weeks to eat up the oil and evaporate. No scrubbing needed nor desireable!
BTW the stuff is dark colored and the fine consistency of talcum powder. 1# supposedly will eat 100 sq feet.

@RRP - You have stains on asphalt?  Usually those aren't as visible and annoying as stains on concrete.

Yes - the day before I had my 3 year old asphalt driveway sealed coated I had a  tree cutter team in with their hydraulic lift and the damn thing leaked oil on a spot 2' x 3'. This was in the very visible turn around area in the direct sun. The oil slick - even though I used Oil-Dry to clean up the excess was still there. It then bled thru the seal coating and looks like a big ugly zit on the nose of your prom date! No way not to stare at it!

The Naked Whiz has a pretty comprehensive review of the High Que Fire Basket.

I have the KAB for the XL and two of the Angle Brackets that I have used for the two zone cook. With the new version of the KAB you do not need to use the original XL grate.

I will save you from choosing. The High-Que basket is not made for the BGE XL.
With XL, kick ash also recommends keeping the standard grate IN PLACE, so it will not increase your airflow. That said, I have one just for ease of cleaning and it works great.
I use the KAB in my XL and I really like it.  I was curious about the recommendation to use the original charcoal grate with the KAB so I emailed Chad to see what was up with that.  Here is his reply: "Thanks for reaching out. That recommendation comes from our early version that had a lot smaller gauge wire and was designed to be used with the cooking grate.  Now with our heavy duty straight bottom design, we have guys using it without the lower grate and truly Kick Ash & Making Flames! ...."

now I can keep on using the original grate as a trivet for my hot plate setter when switching over from low and slow to high heat direct.

Have Kick Ashes in both larges.  Pain in tha arse I thought at first.  Grew to see the benefit of them.  Take them out for low & slows as the firebox holds more lump without them.

The DE powder used in a pool filter?  Could you spread that out dry on the stains?  I have pavers that look like crap.  Aside from taking them up and replacing them, I'm looking for a better solution to clean it up.  Too much egging under the influence by me!

Yep, that's the stuff.  Sold in the pool section of places like Home Despot.

You want to make that slurry with TSP and water.  It should get the stains out of the pavers.  Read up on diatomaceous earth...it's magical.  Kills insects too (by drying them up), but it's non-toxic.

I'd try the high que.... the grates in my eggs show a little rust.

my KAB in the MM is nothing but rust,,,,

    good luck
How long have you had the KAB in your MM? How quickly did you notice it was rusting? Have you contacted the company? Did they respond?

Spread the stuff lightly on Saturday for a two week period and by Sunday afternoon I was surprised to see how the bacteria had already started to bond/eat the oil. By this afternoon the darkened pattern which is the telltale evidence had nearly doubled. I'm really thinking/hopeing this stuff will work as it is supposed to do!
